Advanced Micro Devices may offer gamers something, which significantly boosts performance of single-threaded games with its new central processing units (CPUs) in socket AM2 form-factor. AMD was working on the technology designed to boost performance of single-threaded applications on multi-core processors. The company is going to offer their own technology that will work in an opposite way to what Intel Hyper-Threading does: it increases performance of dual-core chips in single-threaded applications. But the feature should require synchronization of chips’ L1 cache in general along with some other capabilities. Perhaps, the new technology will simply overclock the processor and disable the second core in certain situations.
The corresponding functionality has already been built into dual-core Athlon 64 X2 processors for Socket AM2 form-factor. To activate it customers will “only need to update the processor driver and the mainboard BIOS. Microsoft Corp. will reportedly even release a corresponding patch for the operating systems that will allow recognizing two cores of the Athlon 64 X2 as a single one. The CPU will be able to switch into this “combined” mode dynamically, depending on the type of the application.
No, da ne pricam unapred, videcemo.
Without commenting on performance, lets just say I believe it is there now. 🙂

Medjutim, to je izgleda posledica loseg dizajna i exclusive cache arhitekture....AMD je napisao(la):Intended for all owners of dual-core processors, AMD Dual-Core Optimizer is a piece of software that allegedly improves gaming performance by bypassing Windows' API in some specific situations.
This utility helps that software access the RDTSC instruction directly, in order to correct the Time Stamp Counter on separate cores. It effectively keeps both cores working in parallel and reduces the differing video performance effects, or any other flaws that relate to timing situations in dual-core or upcoming multicore processors.
Ne ocekujte da je to reversibilni HT. :dThis utility fix couple of affinity issues between L2 cache write combining due to a bad L2 cache structure ... It is going to get worse with K8L 🙂 Thread migration is an issue when your L2 Cache is not shared. You can get the same performance improvement by setting up affinity by hand with Windows.
This utility basically turns your Dual core into a single core for the game selected, making sure that the thread migration does not trash your L2cache for each migration. What a pity ... Bad design requires cheap fix ...
Non unified L2 cache has its down side, AMD and Intel use to have this issue, Conroe and Yonah fixed it for intel ... AMD will have to get there, a quick fix is their L3 cache of the K8L, but this will increase their latencies ...
AM2 motherboard owners rejoice, AM2 has a long future
AMD has released details of its next-generation desktop CPU interface, Socket AM3, to its OEM partners. In a mildly surprising move, AMD has revealed that AM2 will accept AM2 or AM3 CPU packages. Additionally, recent roadmaps have confirmed that AM3, AMD's upcoming desktop CPU socket, will not be backwards compatible with AM2-package CPUs. Roadmaps and memos have also confirmed that this AM3 package will be for AMD's "K8L" architecture, and not for the upcoming 65nm AM2 Brisbane CPUs scheduled for launch this December.
The most recent AMD roadmap is also very clear to state AM3 "supports either DDR2 SDRAM or DDR3 SDRAM, but not on the same motherboard." This is great news for upgraders, as there is a very clear upgrade path: CPU, motherboard, and then memory. This also infers that AM3 CPUs will have both DDR2 and DDR3 support on the integrated memory controller. DDR3, like DDR2, has 240-pin, but the two formats are not pin-compatible.
As we also mentioned earlier, Greyhound will be the first desktop processor to support HyperTransport 3.0. Part of the specification for HT-3 is backwards compatibility with older revisions of HyperTransport, and the forward compatibility of the AM2 socket confirms that. However, it’s important to mention that even though AM3 CPUs will work in the AM2 socket, HT-3 allows for 5.2 Giga-transfers per second, while current AM2 motherboards top out at 2.0 Giga-transfers per second. Even though the additional headroom is likely not completely necessary, quad-core CPUs will certainly benefit from the additional bandwidth to the DDR3 memory.
There is no word yet on the number of pins the new socket will require, but since AM2 sockets are forward compatible with AM3 CPUs, we can at least deduct that AM3 will have fewer than 940 pins. Furthermore, since Socket AM2 is forwards compatible with AM3 CPUs, it is also safe to say that AM3 is not a land-grid array (LGA) socket. AMD will switch its Opteron platform to an LGA-1207 socket on August 1, 2006. AMD has not announced when Socket AM3 will be released, although since it would be the first HT-3 "ready" socket design, it seems likely that K8L and AM3 for the desktop will launch simultaneously.
