Šta je novo?

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. — Clear Sky

Novi preview.

Aiming for Perfection

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky is a prequel to the epic survival FPS, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, both of which are developed by GSC Game World Studio.

GSC had a great idea with the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R. as an open-ended, free-roaming first-person shooter. It also had some RPG-like elements to it, such as inventory management and stats that were affected by items such as weapons and body armour. However, as is natural for these types of games, the game had many bugs. Patches were released to cure some of the more game-killing bugs, but plenty of glitches still persist. The good news is that for Clear Sky, the X-Ray game engine has been upgraded to version 1.5, along with improvements to the A-life system and combat AI in general. These upgrades should mean less crippling bugs this time around.

The Story

Not much is known about the story other than the player takes on the role of a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (which, by the way stands for Scavenger, Trespasser, Adventurer, Loner, Killer, Explorer, and Robber) in The Zone whose goal is to kill a S.T.A.L.K.E.R by the name of Strelok.

The player may choose which out of the eight factions they wish to join and do battle against the other factions and dangerous wildlife, among other things. The player doesn't have to join any of the factions to complete the game, but joining a faction has many advantages over going solo, such as guides to take you to certain areas of The Zone so you don't have to travel all the way on foot. Probably one of the most useful advantages of joining a faction however, is the new squad-based combat system. Keep in mind you won't be able to command your allies directly. Luckily, though, what they do is dependent on you and your enemies' actions, making them extremely useful against the dangerous mutated creatures as well as armed foes, both of which are much smarter this time around.

The Zone

As was mentioned above, Clear Sky takes place in The Zone. Because this is the same region that was explored in the first game, you'll get to experience some of the same areas again, albeit under different circumstances. It's been revealed that half of the areas in the game are the same locations as in the Shadow of Chernobyl, and the rest are brand new. One of the new levels is the swamp, where a vicious and invisible Marsh Bloodsucker, which is strong enough to send you and your allies sailing through the air, lives.

New engine and AI

The new game engine will now support DirectX 9 and 10, so you can get the most out of the newest top-of-the-line video cards. In addition to more detailed player models and water and special effects, all lighting is now completely dynamic. A really useful feature is the ability for you to repair and upgrade your weapons, making it unnecessary to carry around a bunch of extra weapons. Shifting the focus to the AI for a moment, enemies and allies will take cover in many ways when necessary, and can interact with the environment (which is now somewhat destructible) and the many dynamic objects included in the game. In addition to this, NPC routines change according to what time of day it is in-game, making the A-Life system that much more varied.

What about Multiplayer?

Clear Sky is confirmed to have an online multiplayer mode. Whether or not the multiplayer mode will contain vehicles is still being decided by the developers, although more than likely they will be included. There are also high hopes for an upgraded editor like the one that was included in the Shadow of Chernobyl for players to make their own multiplayer maps and (hopefully) single-player missions and scenarios.

In Conclusion...

Clear Sky has already improved so many things from the first game, that I'm excited to see what else has been revamped since then. The game has been given a release date of Q1 2008, so expect an exact date hopefully very soon. The game will ship via Steam and traditional DVD media available in stores when it's released.

A-Life, Emergent AI and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: An Interview with Dmitriy Iassenev - http://aigamedev.com/interviews/stalker-alife

AC: In retrospect, what parts of the system and/or development process were you particularly happy with?

DI: I was very happy with the work done when I followed a stalker from one level to another, saw how he searched for artefacts, found them, returned to the dealer, approached him, traded, picked a new quest, went on — too bad this did not make it into the original game. It was very interesting to witness.

When we were just implementing GOAP, it was very interesting to watch two hostile unarmed characters that knew were to get weapons and ammo: they first run to the weapons, find that they have no ammo, then run to the ammo, the first one to get there causes the other to panic if he is still far away from weapons and ammo, the panickier gets wounded and falls, the other approaches to finish him (this did not make it into the original game, since all characters received unlimited ammo, and such situations could not take place).

It was very interesting to watch a fight of several dogs and one stalker — it was breathtaking to see this sight, as he flees the dogs, switching covers. Sometimes he died quickly, sometimes managed to take down 4-5 dogs, and sometimes all 6.
Sta kazete na ovo?

AC: Can you tell us about the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. prequel you are working on? Where would you like to take the A-Life technology?

We changed the role of factions in simulations. i.e it used to be some smart terrain, one of a hundred, that generated quests with the precondition that they could only be taken by members of certain factions, but now the faction itself is a game entity, it has its own goals within the simulation, fights other factions, while the player can assist this and immediately see the result of his actions.

Also, we made several changes to the character’s combat behaviour. Now they fight more efficiently and became more believable.

:trust:

I jos jedan CS preview, ali veoma opsiran i informativan - http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=183715

"Most of the features in Clear Sky were from the original concept that we were working on but were not included in Stalker," says Bolshakov. "We picked some and we're now integrating them into this new game. What we're making is more complete and polished."

Blowouts from the reactor keep the Zone in flux, as Bolshakov explains: "The blowout in the story changed certain areas of the Zone, so the anomalous activity in certain areas faded, and increased in other areas. Paths to the known locations have disappeared, while others have opened up. Part of the old areas will be preserved, while there will also be new ones too. Right now Pripyat will not be part of Clear Sky, but we'll see how things go."
Izgleda da Pripyat nece biti dio igre? Steta.

One such feature was the spectacular nuclear storm called the, a thundering anomaly that drove the wildlife of the zone before it and forced Stalkers to take cover. We were being awed by it in preview sessions a couple of years before the original game was released. We asked Bolshakov about its omission.

"It was really painful to take out a bunch of features. Especially because we'd spent so much time designing and implementing a feature. You live with it and learn to love it, and that's a very difficult thing. However, in our situations where there had been a number of delays, everyone on the team had an understanding that we risked the project simply being closed down. It was done thoughtfully, so there was no real crying about it."

Central to that is what GSC are doing with the various factions that inhabit the zone. While there were a large number of factions in the original game (Freedom, Duty, the military, the mercenaries, the scientists, the neutral stalkers and the servants of the monolith) you were only really able to follow three paths: Neutrality, Freedom, or Duty. In Clear Sky you'll be able to join up with seven different factions, work with them, fight them, and ultimately lead your chosen side to victory.

No izdavac Deep Silver je opovrgnuo tu informaciju.

Mene je video odusevio. Kretanje i ponasanje Stalkera je fenomenalno odradjeno, a tek kretanje mutanta (flash) kroz volumetricno osvjetljenje. No najvise me odusevio napad bloodsuckera. Brutalno, nevidjeno!

:wall:

Community Q&A Answers

1. Will you keep releasing patches for Shadow of Chernobyl even after Clear Sky comes out? How many will there be, and when can we expect patch 1.1?

As we have stated previously, right now all our efforts are directed at releasing Clear Sky. However, after this is done, the team will return to work on the patches.

2. How will enemies react to being wounded in certain limbs (limp, drop weapons)?

It will definitely be possible to tell how the enemy is wounded. Characters play animations of being hit, but one should not drop his weapon in battle. The weak do not survive in the Zone.

3. Will all locations with A-life work at once, without making you carry out all quests?

You do not need to carry out quests in order for A-life to work. It will work all the time and at all locations.

4. Will the DX8 renderer change (for the worse or for the better)?

The DX8 renderer will remain at the same level, the same as you saw it in Shadow of Chernobyl.

5. Will there be cooperative missions in multiplayer (for example, defend a point against monsters, like the Invasion mode in UT2004)?

No, there will not be such modes, but there will be teamplay.

6. Will bonfire shadows in CS be dynamic, or static and unreal, like in ShoC?

It all depends on which renderer you use. The better the renderer, the more effects you will see in the game, the more beautiful will the fire and raindrops be. With the 9th and 10th renderers, all light sources, including bonfires, are dynamic, with dynamic shadows.

7. Will the users who buy CS by Steam have the same freedom to handle the files freely, versions of the game and mods like those who buy it in his physical edition?

You will be able to freely use game files and make mods no matter how you buy the game, in a store or through Steam. We do not want to limit the fans, and we are very happy to see a growing number of talented people making interesting mods.

8. Will we see a demo before Clear Sky's publication?

No, there will be no demo version of Clear Sky. Not all that much time is left before the release, and soon you will be able to experience the full world of STALKER.

9. What specific graphical new features can we expect with the DirectX 10 support? Improved motion blur that is object-specific? Improved lights and shadows?

DirectX 10 will support such effects as volumetric smoke, fog, sunshaft, dynamic wet surfaces (rain), volumetric light, and soft shadows.

10. Are there any new features in A-life that is worth mentioning? Is the AI more "free" this time?

Clear Sky will have a more elaborate A-life simulation, there will be much great "freedom". There will be a faction war in the Zone, a struggle for territory. The player will be able to choose a faction he likes best and lead it to victory, weakening the other factions in the process. The stronger your faction becomes, the better ammunition the fighters will have. At the same time, we made behavior of regular stalkers in the game more live-like. You will be able to speak with practically every stalker, trade with him, or get a quest.

11. How will the different fights work between the different clans in the game? Will they be completely random, will you find them anywhere in the world or is there "battlefields?" where you know that there will be enemy clans?

The war of factions will often change direction. Transition points and resources get captured, unexpected attacks are carried out. It all happens randomly, and your actions affect events in the Zone.

12. In the single-player Mode, will the player be able to form a group, a "band", with some "friends"? In this case, will the player be able to lead his group?

The player can enter almost any faction and help them lead in the war, but, the player at the core a lone wolf and is used to rely only on himself.

13. In Shadow of Chernobyl the list of console commands hinted at some graphics features that the developers seem to have abandoned, due to difficulty of implementation or performance (global illumination, motion blur, etc.). Will these features be used in Clear Sky?

We found some interesting solutions that allow us to get the same effect as global illumination, but with a much smaller performance hit. We use the deferred shading technology, which has many advantages, but does not allows us to implement motion blur.

14. One fan-made video from a game exhibition (Igromir?), mentioned the Depth of field (DOF) effect. Will it really be used in the game, and how (only while aiming)?

DOF is actually used in specific places in the game, for instance, during reloading.

15. Can we complete the game without joining factions and/or ignoring the quests?

Yes, if you want, you can choose to not participate in the faction war. Also, if some you dislike some sidequests, you can finish the game without them. Of course, the main character has a certain goal and mission in the game, and it will have huge significance for all stalker and the Zone itself.

Ovo izgleda jezivo dobro! I kada izlazi, da uzimam godisnji???

Particularly impressing were the weather effects. The rain sizzled very realistically on the soil, the underground worked by the rain plastic.
Also sporadically arising lightnings and the shadows effects resulting from it convinced us. In particular the tree shadows was optically outstanding. In the scene , also God Rays - sunshafts - were to be admired, thus sunbeams, which proceeded from a certain point.
Impresivno!

The system, on which the DX10-Demo ran, had among other things a Nvidia videocard of the generation GF 9800 .
