update:
[09:47] <midnightmagic> Yes, Karpeles is still largely to blame. He bought the exchange when it was insolvent to begin with (IIRC) and his negligence and lack of due diligence caused the coins to be lost after that.
[09:48] <midnightmagic> Incompetence is not being able to recognize ones own limitations. Negligence is refusing to correct the problem in the face of strong evidence.
[10:06] <@nikuhodai> plenty of blame to go around and tons of instances where the problem could have been contained if only someone had done the right thing
[10:07] <@nikuhodai> can think of a couple of other people who should be on trial too, and many others who should be ought to be ashamed of their actions
[10:30] * midnightmagic tightly holds onto his mtgox yubikey
[10:34] <gmaxwell> nikuhodai: well, seems the public will never know anything.
[10:34] <gmaxwell> nikuhodai: so people who should be blamed will get of scott free.
[10:35] <gmaxwell> and others cannot learn from the mistakes that mtgox made.
[10:35] <gmaxwell> other than "don't have Mark run your exchange"-- which is not exactly a useful lesson.
[10:35] <gmaxwell> esp since it's probably mostly not right. (in that if everything else went right, mark alone wouldn't have screwed it up)
[10:37] <@nikuhodai> I'm still holding out hope law enforcement will still be able to do something useful with the information that's been dug up privately
[10:37] <gmaxwell> wouldn't they lose face after keeping mark in jail for so long?
[10:37] <@nikuhodai> but these things are slow, I have limited insights into their progress, and eventually if nothing happens I'll lose patience and spill the beans myself.. >_<
[10:38] <@nikuhodai> oh the Japanese police certainly, they're focusing on entirely the wrong parts IMO
[10:38] <@nikuhodai> the stuff they're charging mark with is peanuts compared to the main thefts
[10:39] <@nikuhodai> they used to follow up on a wider front, including missing bitcoins, but the current prosecution has a much more narrow approach specifically targeting whatever they can stick on mark
[10:40] <gmaxwell> right so previously the trustee seemed uninteresting in even communicating with law enforcement elsewhere. So if the japanese police won't investigate... seems like no one else is
[10:40] <gmaxwell> so keeping the information secret only shelters the theives.
[10:41] <@nikuhodai> there are others pursuing it in the west, with access to all known information so far (a lot more than is known publicly)
[10:42] <@nikuhodai> therein lies the tricky tradeoff for people like me: tell the public or hold off even longer to give these guys a chance to bring it to a conclusion
[10:43] <@nikuhodai> chainalysis' comment the other day about "finding" the mtgox coins refers to these same findings, the same trails have been independently found by a couple different people by now
[10:45] <@nikuhodai> mark commented in that same article about how talking too much about this stuff "may compromise any future potential arrest(s)", I'm assuming he's aware of and referring to these same efforts
[10:50] <gmaxwell> I'm kind of dubious about the whole thing.
