The price difference for the processors is rather dramatic - Intel is charging Itanium prices for the Xeon 7500s, while AMD has slashed the cost of the Opteron 6100s to a lot less than what it was charging for the Opteron 8400s used in 4P boxes. The Opteron 4100s will be less costly - in some cases a lot less - than the Opteron 2400s they replace.

Chian described two chip designs from customers that he said illustrated the kind of collaboration that made GloFo different from other foundries. Those are the AMD Fusion, already in production, which uses 32 nanometre SOI process technology, high k metal gate, four CPU cores and 11 copper metal layers. AMD codenames that the Llano – it’s already in production said Chian.

The other chip he described was the ARM Cortex-A9. “The level of collaboration between a [chip] designer and a foundry is unprecedented,” he said.

... znači, predstavljanje u Q4/2010 je realno moguće ?

Digli im malo kreditni rejting:
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Moody's Investors Service on Monday raised Advanced Micro Devices' (AMD 8.99, +0.61, +7.28%) senior unsecured rating to Ba3 from B2. The outlook is positive. "The upgrade and positive outlook was prompted by the company's notably reduced financial leverage, stable to improving market positions, and the longer term benefits from establishing a fabless business model, which enhances AMD's prospects to generate more consistent profitability and cash flow going forward," said Moody's in a statement.

ATI wins Apple iMac and Mac Pro deal

The new iMACs now come with Radeon HD 4670, the only DirectX 10.1 part in this selecton, followed by DirectX 11 HD 5670 and HD 5750 cards. Also, the new series is powered by Intel Core i3 and Core i5 processors rather than Core 2 Duos and quads.

The new 21.5-inch Apple iMac comes with Radeon HD 4670 with 256MB GDDR3 memory and Radeon HD 5670 with 512MB of GDDR3 memory, while the 27-inch model comes with a dual-core processor and Radeon HD 5670 with 512MB of DDR3 memory or Radeon HD 5750 with 1GB of GDDR5 memory.

Apple even claims on its website that “Games scream on iMac, thanks to advanced ATI graphics. The discrete ATI Radeon HD 4670 processor delivers faster performance compared to the integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9400M processor in the previous-generation iMac. That’ll keep you on your game, even inside the complex 3D environments of Call of Duty 4 or EVE. For faster graphics performance, choose an iMac with the ATI Radeon HD 5670 or ATI Radeon HD 5750.”

The choice of ATI only is even more surprising as with these Mac Pro machines Geforce GTX 460 could be a nice option, but Apple only chose to use Radeon HD 5770 with 1GB of GDDR5 or Radeon HD 5870 with 1GB of GDDR5.
One of the interesting things for video editing guys might be the fact that ATI Radeon 5000 cards do support up to six displays.

AMD Surpasses NVIDIA in Discrete Graphics Shipments

AMD has finally surpassed NVIDIA in terms of shipments of discrete graphics (graphics cards), according to market research firm Mercury Research, in a report released on Wednesday. AMD's discrete graphics products held 51% of the discrete graphics market, with NVIDIA slipping down to 49%, in terms of discrete graphics products shipments in Q2 2010. For the same quarter last year, the two were poised at 41% for AMD and 59% for NVIDIA, indicating a significant growth, fruition of AMD's DirectX 11 push of deploying a new-generation lineup that spans all price-points in a span of four months.

For the overall GPU industry, with integrated graphics included, the picture for Q2 2010 looks like Intel holding 54.3%, AMD holding 24.5%, and NVIDIA with 19.8%. Last year, in Q2 2009, NVIDIA held 29.6% versus AMD's 18.2%. NVIDIA's deployment of a DirectX 11 compliant GPU lineup has been rather slow, with only two GPUs and four SKUs deployed so far, starting at $199. NVIDIA does not have the fastest graphics card. On Wednesday, the Santa Clara based company warned that its revenue would fall short of earlier projections (set at the time of Fermi's launch). This announcement came after Apple announced a series-wide transition of graphics chips inside its Macbooks, iMac, and Mac Pro computers to AMD's ATI Radeon from NVIDIA GeForce.

E ovo je vrhunac gluposti :) Koje bre igre, za Mac nema celih 5 krstenih igara. Kakav bullshit.

Sto, imas deonice AMD-a? ;)

Naravno, just my 0.02$ :).

@neogeo

In addition, Apple is also set to launch a new Apple TV using AMD's Fusion solution and will not include a hard drive. The new device will adopt a user interface similar to the iPhone with support for social networking websites, network multimedia and the App Store. Mass production of the device will start in December, Digitimes Research noted.

AMD to continue focus on traditional PC market: Q&A with AMD CEO Dirk Meyer

AMD has recently been seeing progress in its development of accelerated processing units (APU), while achieving success in discrete GPU market share, Digitimes recently had chance to talk to the company CEO Dirk Meyer to further discuss AMD's strategy and lineup for the future.

Q: How did AMD benefit from the spin-off of Globalfoundries?

A: AMD has become a fabless semiconductor company and is no longer required to manage its factories, therefore the company is able to spend more time and energy focusing on R&D and marketing to efficiently boost the investment return of its intellectual property (IP).

In order to speed up the company's response time to market demand, we have integrated the management of CPU and GPU departments and formed a new department, the products group, led by Rick Bergman. As a result, AMD will be able to evaluate all the products with a more comprehensive perspective, helping the company to best use its IP and launching products with an even quicker time-to-market.

Meanwhile, we also have a department, the customer group, that give assistance to our clients. The department is also in charge of marketing as well as pricing of the products to allow the department to quickly respond to client demand.

AMD's CPUs are mostly outsourced to Globalfoundries, while GPU and chipsets are outsourced to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). We plan to outsource APUs to Globalfoundries.

Q: Can you tell us about AMD's APU plans?

A: The Fusion products (APUs) can be adopted into netbooks, notebooks and desktops, and we are already in the process of manufacturing engineering samples with official shipments set for the first half of 2011.

As for the market watchers' concerns about whether APUs will impact the discrete graphics card market, we believe the influence will be very limited since the GPUs in our Fusion products target the mainstream market, and consumers in the enthusiast market will still need a discrete graphics card for their high-performance PCs.

Q: What are AMD's thoughts about Intel and Nvidia entering the tablet PC and smartphone markets?

A: We don't have plans to enter the smartphone market since the industry is already filled with players and we believe that we should focus on the industries where we have advantages, such as notebooks, desktops and servers.

As for tablet PCs, based on our years of observation, I believe tablets have the chance to see obvious growth after average prices drop below US$299. For now, tablet PCs are simply a supplemental product of the traditional PC.

Although AMD is not the first player to enter the industry, if we can find a good business opportunity in the market, I believe we are capable of becoming a quick follower.

Q: Despite the fact that netbook shipment growth is already slowing down, why is AMD still aggressive in the industry.

A: We are still optimistic about the netbook market. According to our internal data, netbook shipments in 2011 will still see an on-year growth of 20%, similar to that of traditional notebooks, meaning netbook shipments will be able to reach 20-30 million units next year.

Due to their cheap price, netbooks are only capable of giving consumers very basic functions such as browsing the Internet and receiving e-mails, but as consumers still demand more from these machines and are asking to be able to run multimedia content as well as playing games, AMD has offered a new ultra-thin series notebook platform, targeting a market segment that we called Super Mobility, which we believe will see quick growth.

The ultra-thin platform allows AMD's partners to develop notebooks with performance surpassing the traditional netbook, but still featuring a similar low price. Lenovo has already released two products that feature the platform, the ThinkPad Edge and ThinkPad X100e.

In 2011, AMD will launch a new processor codenamed Bobcat, targeting mainly the netbook market; however, the processor may also be used for smaller devices such as tablet PCs.

Bobcat, technically, should have no trouble being adopted by tablet PCs, but the choice will still lie in the hands of vendors. Although our CPU's power consumption already meets consumers' needs for tablet PCs, we are still evaluating carefully before deciding how much to invest in the tablet PC market.

Q: What are AMD's plans for cloud computing

A: Facing fierce market competition, our server CPU market share in the past year has maintained level. We believe there are chances us to raise its market share in the future.

We launched our 12-core Magny-Cours processor under the Opteron 6000 series platform in the first half of 2010, and are set to launch the Opteron 4000 series in the future.

Our strategy is to provide our clients with all different levels of products that satisfy their demands with low prices. We believe our strategy can perfectly meet market demand, especially as cloud computing is already becoming a standard application in the IT market.
