For the first time ever, a camera has captured the breathtaking moment when hundreds of emperor penguin chicks took a daring leap from a towering ice cliff into the ocean below.
Wildlife filmmaker Bertie Gregory documented this remarkable event in Antarctica, where young penguins gathered at the edge of a 15-meter (about 50-foot) ice platform, preparing for their first dive into the sea. Huddled together like a group of nervous teenagers, they hesitated, waiting to see who would be the first to make the plunge. Once one penguin leapt, the rest followed in a dramatic cascade.
Typically, emperor penguin chicks take their first swim at around six months old, usually by sliding gently into the water or jumping from a small one-meter ledge. However, in this rare and astonishing footage captured by National Geographic Explorer Bertie Gregory, nearly 700 chicks found themselves in a precarious situation, forced to leap from a much higher 10-foot cliff in search of food.

The true size of each country is in dark blue.

The light blue, the one we’re used to seeing, is the Mercator map, or Mercator projection, a cylindrical map projection that was developed by the Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569.

It is commonly used for navigation and world maps because it preserves angles, making it useful for marine navigation.

However, one of its main drawbacks is that it distorts the size of objects as they get closer to the poles. For example, Greenland appears much larger than it actually is in comparison to countries near the equator like Africa, which is significantly smaller in size than it appears on the map.

On April 6, 2025, Japan's toll system experienced a major glitch, disrupting over 100 toll gates across Tokyo and seven other prefectures. To prevent a traffic disaster, authorities lifted the toll barriers and allowed vehicles to pass without paying, asking drivers to settle their tolls online later.

Incredibly, 21,000 drivers voluntarily paid their tolls after the system was restored—demonstrating a surprising level of trust in the system despite there being no penalties for non-payment.
