Da razbijemo vec jedno te urbane legende.
Pre svega low level API nije nesto sto je od skoro smisljeno.
3DFX je 90-tih imao Glide API koji je bio predvidjen za tadasnje Voodoo 3DFX karte.
Tako da prica oko revolucionarnog dostignuca i ideje AMDa pada u vodu.

The question, then, almost asks itself. Did AMD's work on Mantle motivate Microsoft to introduce a lower-level graphics API?
When I spoke to AMD people a few hours after the D3D12 reveal, I got a strong sense that that wasn't the case—and that it was developers, not AMD, who had spearheaded the push for a lower-level graphics API on Windows. Indeed, at the keynote, Microsoft's Development Manager for Graphics, Anuj Gosalia, made no mention of Mantle. He stated that "engineers at Microsoft and GPU manufacturers have been working at this for some time," and he added that D3D12 was "designed closely with game developers."
U daljem razgovoru na pitanje da li je DX12 zapocet pre Mantle celnici iz AMDa su vesto odgovorili da to njima nije poznato i ako se u daljem tekstu pojasnjava da Mantle bez Microsofta ne bi ni postojao.
Corpus explained that, when AMD was developing Mantle, it received no feedback from game developers that would suggest AMD was wasting its time because a similar project was underway at Microsoft.
Po svemu sudeci AMD je znao za DX12 ali je svoju pricu sa Mantle izgurao da bi se Marketinski prodao.
Projekat je sluzio kao podloga da se podigne sto veca prodaja grafickih kartica baziranih na njihovoj GCN arhitekturi. Od tud Mantle nikad nije ni izasao iz svoje Beta faze.

Za to su zapravo krive konzole i licno Microsoft.
Kada su napravili dil sa konzolama bili su u obavezi da naprave svoj low-level API za hardver baziran na GCN arhitekturi koji ce da ugradjuju u konzole xbox one i ps4.
Kako im se to poklopilo bila je idealna prilika da izreklamiraju svoje karte i podignu hajp najvise moguce.
