The Chernobyl zone is lit by an intolerably bright light. The clouds are evaporating in the silver bright sky with a thunder and earthquake to follow. People fall on the ground face-down, closing their bleeding eyes and ears. The glow spreads over an immense territory which is subsequently called the Zone. People run away to save their lives. It looks as if a radioactive explosion has occurred at the nuclear power plant. The army seals off the Zone... The epicentre of the explosion is one kilometre away from the nuclear plant. Obviously, some tests have been held there which have caused the disaster. Presumably, the entire personnel has died within seconds, but still there is a probability of survivals among the staff. It appears impossible to arrange a rescue operation, as the Zone is characterized by strange energy disturbances, posing a mortal danger to the explorers. Attempts to use robots are unavailing. Several months after the accident, the crisis situation peaks when the Zone abruptly grows five kilometres bigger. People from nearby towns and villages are urgently evacuated, and the peril of a difficult-to-imagine scope looms over the world.
