The stalker review is by KG. It's 6 pages and a good balance between text and screenshots. Imo it's the best review i've read in a while; taking time to analyse the game rather than just recounting cool stuff that happened in it or a creative writing essay with a few references to the game thrown in.

Anyway:
"Allow me to introduce you to STALKER; the bravest, most futurist survival horror game since System Shock 2."
"It's best described as a first-person shooter/roleplaying game/ survival horror hybrid, in that order....the horror is the thing that underlines the whole game. It's what makes it work. It's what makes it different."

"It's a game full of suprises. For the cynics...the biggest is that it works at all."
"The biggest problem stalker now faces is those early rash promises. To get a game which works, features have been trimmed back. For anyone who's been following the aga, there'll be a moment when they realise something they were hoping for isn't there."

KG then talks about a few side missions that have variable outcomes: Asked to join in defense of a base but dawdled and was chastised when arriving as they'd already fought off the attack. Asked to wipe out a camp but it was empty as they were off attacking a scrapayard.
It makes the game sound exciting and unpredictable.

"And there are other suprises. With all the screens of tentacle-monsters, you'd be expecting to see a lot more of them. In actual fact, monsters are rare. The vast majority of things you open fire on are fellow humans. This leads to a unique atmosphere in a PC science-fiction gam, where the strange is strange."

što se mene tiče ova igra će izgleda da me prijatno iznenadi
 
Ova igra će iznenaditi svakoga jer slična ne postoji. Mislim da su Ukrainci stvorili posebnu formulu kombinacijom više žanrova?
No nije mi jasno šta su u PCGamer-u recenzirali? Jeli to full verzija, ili je SP beta? Full verzija izlazi tek 23 marta, a PCGamer nema običaj recenzirati beta verzije.
Ocjena bi sigurno išla i preko 90 da nema tih sitnijih bugova.

Nemoj tako, ostani dosledan, popljuj igru jer nema poteznu borbu i naglasi koliko je Fallout nelinearniji :)

:d ne secam se kad sam ja to zapravo radio... to pripremam samo za fo3 :S:

a i totalno je neuporedivo, fps sa po kojim questom kao oblivion i fallout "hard-core" rpg :)
 
Scavengers, Trespassers, Adventurers, Loners, Killers, Explorers, Robbers - je zajednički naziv za sve plaćenike koji će se naći u zoni.

Zna li neko koji je cilj ove igre /? (mislim, spasiti cernobil, srusiti elektranu, dovesti cevi za navodnjavanje, iscisiti zemljiste, posaditi krompir ?...)

ja necu da znam cilj igre, necu da znam pricu.... totalno spojluje dozivljaj kasnije :) samo sam procitao tehnikalije vezane za gejmplej manje vise... nije ni cudo sto nas igre smore kad saznamo o njima 80% stvari mesecima pre njihovog pojavljivanja
 
Priča i treba ostati neotkrivena, a i malo toga se zna. Navodno bi trebalo biti više završetaka?

This is my configuration:
CPU: Intel Pentium 4, 3,5GHz (+ Hyper-Threading, 64-Bit)
RAM: 1024MB DDR2-533 RAM (Single-Channel)
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon x1950Pro 256MB (Original: 574/1376 - OC: 615/1476)
Sound: Realtek High Definition Audio (5.1 Surround used)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2 (+ the latest hotfixes and the latest directx9-version)

As i started S.T.A.L.K.E.R., he recommeneded me to use "high" settings. This includes maximum texture-details, but lowered grass-amount (It's still on 3/4) and 1024x768.
Also it uses the highest setting of the renderer, the complete Dynamic Lightning.

Just at the beginning of the game you see why you should use the recommended 2gb of RAM: Whilst you're talking with the dealer, it run's great. But after the talking, as you have to walk up into the free area, it just starts to load. massively. I had to wait nearly 2 minutes (after the loading-screen!) until the game has load everything into the hard-disc (the 1gb RAM is already full at the loading screen of course) and i could walk nearly smooth without problems. Surely, as i walked into the near town, it was loading again shortly for several times, but nothing big.
As i played the first level and has walked deeper into the zone, it were running very great. I had frame-rates between 30 and 40. But as it was night and a great lightning was coming, i had several problems with the lightnings. Not everytime, but often it goes down to 3-4 frames per second if you move yourself whilst a lightning is glowing up the whole area. Everyone who has played the beta will remind on this one.
At the last, you should avoid to tab the game to the desktop. It takes minutes, and as you want to go back into the game, you have to wait this minutes multiplied through 2. Also tried with 2GB, there you'll have no problems. So really, if you have the possibility, use 2GB. It makes the whole game a lot smoother, no matter on which details you'll play.

So, a x1950Pro should really be enough for this game on high-settings, if i had to play on 1280x1024 instead on my 1024x768, i really had to play the game at middle-settings (Which is unacceptable, cuz' a x1950Pro is officially under the "cards recommended for maximum details) because on some areas it was nearly at the 15fps. As i heard, it runs very smooth on cards like a 8800GTX, even with maximum details. Maybe this is because S.T.A.L.K.E.R. uses nearly (or more) 512MB graphics memory.

Znači bez 2GB ne ide. To sam i pretpostavio.

Senke su odlicne to priznajem, ali one zahtevaju video ram, a ne sistemski...Naravno meni to tako deluje, necu nikog da ubedjujem da misli kao ja. I za gotic 3 sam reko da je neoptimizovana kanta. Kao oblivion radi sa 1gb rama kako treba, ne vidim zasto g3 i stalker ne bi mogli...

PS. Gameplay je nesto drugo i on je ono sto me privlaci ovoj igri. Da je obican FPS preskocio je bi je momentalno.

Traileri ti ne mogu dočarati grafiku onakvu kakva stvarno jeste jer su rađeni u maloj rezoluciji. STALKER ti neće biti jedna ogromna otvorena mapa kao Oblivion gdje se svako malo učitava teren i objekti, odnosno učitavaju se male mape što izgleda ružno. On je podijeljen na manje mape koje su odvojene prirodnim barijerama, i da bi se što više toga učitalo treba dosta memorije.

Ponešto sam izdvojio.
My pc: Athalon 2900xp, R1800XT, 2gig RAM – it plays smooth on maximum lightning, if you roll down amount of grass and shadow quality. No AA or Ants.
The first cut scene is beautiful, not to pay attention to animation.
The Trader is really ugly, just like on screenshots, main hero is not too handsome person himself, though.
Loaf of bread cost 20 rubles, soy kelbasa-70. In the very beginning you have only 40 rubles in your pocket.
Stalkers in the camp do sit around fire, shoot s**t, and play guitar. But so far in my presence they didn’t sing, just picked “Tziganochka”. From the bystanders point of view the conversation looks quite realistic- after a finished joke some laugh, some make good comments about joke, some brawl: “Aint you got nothing funnier?”
If you come toward neutral stalker with the weapon in his hands, he will hide it himself.
In the very beginning out of inventory I have binoculars, bulletproof jacket and bolts.
As far as graphic is concerned, models of stalkers look slightly outdated, but lightning and the mood, and is almost realistic.

There were a lot of rumors, that the food and vodka have been cut. Not true. Vodka and food are present. You can die of hunger and clean radiation with the bottle of “Stalkerovka”

I didn’t visit any dark places yet. Scary.
It is even scary just to walk around the forest at night. Imagine a pack of blind dogs hollowing nearby, and you think whether they will attack or not. If they attack you dead, they eat you alive from all sides. The only way to start shooting, they will run away and wait in the dark.

Level detail. I moved through 2 levels out of 18, and still didn’t see “copy-paste”
If you want to compare Stalker with other games it looks like FEAR+Space Rangers+Oblivion+a little of Falout. Looks like thoroughbred shooter got mixed with excellent role playing game. The result, my head goes crazy.

Saw mutants, the ones on tiny legs with bulky bodies and wild eyes in ****“crazy frog”. They’ve been peacefully grazing at the foothill, and decided to attack me. I shot down one, the rest quickly turned around and run away behind the hill, began to graze again. I followed them with the shotgun ready, but they decided not to fight and just run away.
I like the work of morale system.

Gaming world is not just alive, all open spaces are highly populated. For example, you going all across the half of the map to the trader (guns and stuff are heavy!) and all kind of things are happening around you. Dogs are running around, wild boars, stalkers moving around, merk groups wondering around shining flashlights in the bushes. In other words it is not a Silent Hill, where from monster to monster peace and calmness, but Space Rangers, wherever you go, life goes on, fight taking place, or something else.

Once I died from hunger, while on the stalkers base, (don’t even ask how it happened…). Dropped dead, body fell down, and the stalkers when saw it, all grabbed theirs weapons, started to hide and look around, trying to find who killed me. Very impressive.

Bandits just like stalkers like to sit around the fire shooting sh*t, and sleazy stories.
AA is tricky. Enemies like to shoot out of shotguns, running from behind one corner, and hiding behind another. Not enough time to aim. Sometimes they hide behind the corner and test your patience. In regular shooter games, the enemy hides, but after several seconds will show himself nevertheless. Right in your crosshair. Not in this game. The enemy can take position further down the corridor and wait on you just you wait on him. Such a “disappointment”, pisses me off. So you have to run out into his line of fire, because you don’t have too much grenades.

Q How the game does goes? Are you getting a mission, finish it? Or do you pick up additional quests on the level, like Xenus? Or does it look like Oblivion divided into zones where you wonder around picking up the quests, talking to people?
A The levels are very strictly divided, it doesn’t obvious, though. In some places it is barbed wire, in others strong radiation, a bunch of anomalies, and sometimes by the block post of “Dolg” group. They not gonna let you through, unless you can prove to the stalker in charge, that you must get through, or shoot them all down, witch is I think is possible. After completion of different quests, player gets access to the new locations with harder to kill monsters (not all the hogs are equally useful), better loot and new quests, including scripted.
One interesting detail: maps are not joint together, as you might think, they don’t have common borders. They are completely separated and joint together with the road, and while following that road the load window drops down, and you in the new map.

Enemies have eyesight sector and they also can hear you. You can crawl past bandits if the night is dark - but if you try to walk thro bushes they will hear you and aggro. If they lose you they will comment it in different ways: "Cmon get out we won't hurt you!" Sometimes they are too busy fightting a wildlife to notice a lonely stalker.

Steath helps in some missions. Developers say that 70% of game can be played in stealth. But I am not sure about it. Not all nights are very dark in STALKER tho - sometimes you even don't have to turn on flashlight. Dungeons are pretty dark.

Combat AI is very strong. NPCs not only return fire, duck, flank, try to sneak from behind, cover each other, run from grenades but can also:

* They can hide from player behind obstacle (large container, stack of contrete blocks) and move out from any side. You can't predict NPC's behaviour in close combat.

* If they know that player "camp" them on the corner they won't get out of safe spot.

* They can help heavily wounded comrades with medikits and finish off wounded enemies after battle.

* NPC effectively hide if he feels exposed to fire. Even if he see that player is aiming on him he is trying to find cover.

Note that enemy have unlimited ammo (gameplay reasons is think) and don't feel like throwing grenades at player (same?).




Nevjerovatno!?
Another hightlight on how A-Life system looks like. Once I saw a couple of "flesh" creatures (mutant pigs with "crazyfrog" faces) eating some corpse - it was nice and quiet until pack of blind dogs showed up on the edge of level.

Dogs finished one pig quickly but another one managed to run away - dogs chased it. They were running from road to nearby "Duty" ("Dolg") outpost but stalkers didn' open fire - when dogs and pigs saw humans they just turned away to the deserted willage. There were lots of anomalies all around the willages - graviconcentrates (mosquito manges), burnind fluff, springboards. Many dogs got ripped apart in anomalies (i saw a bloody dog scull runnin around) but pig was willing to make it at any cost. Oh no! This willage is not-so-deserted - some really bad bloodsuckers (chtulhu guys, they can turn invisible like Predator) joined the chase. It looked like Benny Hill show chase.

Almost all dogs died, survivours runned away limping. Bloodsuckers gettin ready to finish pig and have some breakfast, but another pig attacked bloodsuckers and killed one. But another killed that pig.

Last scene: last pig and last bloodsucker bite and beat each other. And they both died almost instantly when some nearby anomaly triggered.

I repeat - i saw it with my own eyes. :)

Da li postoji opcija u Stalkeru za nivo tezine(znaci od low do very very.....) recimo kao kod Obliviona kad mozes u svakom trenutku da smanjis ili povecas tezinu same igre ili ce se nivo tezine kretati u zavisnosti od predela, mesta(lokacije) ......

Nivo tezine moze da se bira, ali ne znam da li moze da se menja u toku igre ili samo na pocetku kampanje ...

BTW, i ovaj poslednji build mp beta verzije (ruska verzija) nema sredjen zvuk koraka niti čučanj, sto su minorne, ali vrlo iritirajuce stavke. Minorne u smislu da se mogu vrlo lako resiti ... Sramota ... Na sta ce da lici ostalo, mogu samo da pretpostavim ... No, uvericemo se u sve za par dana, nadam se ... Nadam se da nisam u pravu ...
