Nvidia MCP79 chipset to power Intel Atom Netbooks

MCP79 - aka the GeForce 9400M - currently works with Intel's mobile Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme CPUs. But according to industry moles, Nvidia has signed a deal with Intel to add Atom to the list, assuming it doesn't covertly support the chip already.

The claim comes a month after it was alleged that Nvidia and VIA had killed off a project to develop a netbook reference platform based in Nvidia graphics and VIA processor technology.

Interestingly, the moles maintain the initial focus of the Nvidia-Intel pact - perhaps heralded back in July this year - will centre on Small, Cheap desktop Computers rather than netbooks, presumably for power consumption reasons and because it's felt that desktops need the extra graphical wallop the Nvidia technology can provide more than netbooks do.

NVIDIA MCP79 will be the first 3rd party chipset to support the Intel Atom processor. It will greatly improve the integrated graphics performance of the netbooks.

Judging from the past performance of NVIDIA chipsets which are good for it's IGP and comes with PureVideo, it will definitely improve the display quality. THe only concern would be the power consumption of such chipsets as NVIDIA chipsets are always power hungry. Will NVIDIA powered Atom netbooks be able to last 7 hrs of operation or probably just 1-2 hrs? That remains a big question mark.

Intel избацио сасвим ок процесор, а чипсет тотално неоптимзован - ма трошимо старе залихе :d.

Najbolje bi bilo kada bi AMD 780G radio sa atomom to bi bila dobitna kombinacija.

Platforma je ista kao u novim MacBook(Pro)-ovima... Ako nisu riješili problem koji ovaj čipset ima sa količinom RAM-a, onda je problem isti kao na ovim Apple mašinama - dakle, ne više od 3GB RAM-a...

With still no official word from Intel, we're left with a new report saying that the company won't play nice with Nvidia and won't let it pair up Atom CPUs with the GeForce 9400 chipset. Known as the Ion platform, the Atom, GeForce 9400 pair is a low-cost, low-power solution that provides decent performance, DirectX 10 graphics and full HD capabilities. Or at least, that's what it is supposed to do as Intel is said to have made it very clear that it won't sell Atom processors without a 945 chipset, thus making it hard for manufacturers to adopt Ion and develop cost-effective nettops, netbooks with it.

Since Nvidia's whole idea relies on Intel giving in and selling Atom CPUs without a chipset, the Ion platform is looking like nothing more but a nice dream.

Da, ali je samo grafika 9300M - nema kontrolerske logike. I taj Asus ima i GMA950 i 9300M, ali je čipset Intel 945GSE + ICH7M-U... 😉

A Ion je samo Atom+9400M (ako sam dobro razumeo).

Verovatno ne, ali me to ne sprecava da ih psujem :-devil-:, jer su uskratili narodu dobar chipset.
Mada da im je to bitno, mozda bi i sami napravili neki koji trosi pola vata (znanje im ne nedostaje sigurno).
