Another funny article by +The Verge today, starting by Apple's smartphone cameras consistently outpace the competition
Well, actually if the iPhone 5s camera is decent it has a lot of shortcomings compared to the Android and Windows phone competition that didn't froze in time.
Large sensors, high resolutions, laser-assisted AF, realtime HDR, 4k recording, HDR video, OIS at $350, high quality lenses, latest BSI ExMOR tech from Sony, RAW DNG support, even some questionable but still innovative gimmicks...
So instead what does Apple bring this time.
Phase detect AF: okay that will be interesting to compare to the S5 and Note 4.
Even slower slow-mo properly implemented: everything looks cooler in slow motion
1080p60: depends if it introduces aliasing or is as sharp as the 30p. Temporal resolution is always welcome tho.
OIS, Oh okay that's good!
But wait..
Your mom, who often ends up disappointed by grainy or blurry pics as she wants to save memories in impossible photographic conditions, let's say she buy the latest iPhone, the one at $199 on her contract.
Well nope, no OIS for her!
She would have to buy the insanely priced on contract $299 5.5" slab to get that.
Then the sensor stays at 8MP, 4:3 aspect ratio.
It means 4K is not physically possible.
Why not a 11MP 3840*2880 sensor instead, that would output native 1:1 4K instead?
Or maybe even a tad more to have additional headroom for software stabilization on the non-OIS module.
The stream was crashing constantly: did I miss Apple mentioning support of RAW DNG output?
I bet videographers and photography enthusiasts will switch of platform very soon.
If you're out of Apple reality distortion field (the article linked is not), today's Apple announcements on Camera are mostly disappointments
