No Current Plans for a Gothic MMO Version

Since last December rumours started to grow about possible plans at JoWooD to relaunch the Gothic series as a Multi-Player Online Game. As of yet, no such steps have been actually implemented. This is the answer given by JoWooDs press secretary to a query from «PC Games», a German PC magazine.
JoWooD noticed the interests of fans to the idea since this subject frequently pops up in discussion boards. "We will inform the community should we decide to review the matter in a new light."

Sve ostalo sto sam cuo/video o G3 mi deluje odlicno!

Gothic prezentacija u Becu!

«First Look» Presentation in Vienna 29.03.2006

Piranha Bytes now reports about the «First Look» presentation for the international press given at Vienna's Palais Eschenbach more than a week ago (cf. our first in-game screenshot news).

In a corresponding article about the same event, JoWooD's community manager gave an additional interesting detail. After last years presentations, the developers decided to give both the graphics engine and major game elements like combat system and character development a complete overhaul. This might also explain the time delay for the release until autumn 2006.

"Beautiful sunsets, dynamic clouds (which shape according to the current weather) and the realistic use of fog during dusk made the journalists just gape." according to KaiRo on Gothic's news website.

To satisfy our curiosity, the CM put a link to a zip-file with some pictures from the event on JoWooD's forum site.

FiringSquad PREVIEW!!!!
I Minecrawler clip!

FiringSquad was also treated to a brief demo of Gothic III, the third game in the acclaimed fantasy RPG series from developer Piranha Bytes. The first two games were known for thei open-ended gameplay and the third will be no exception. The big difference is that in the first two games you fought on the Khorinis island against the bad guys. Gothic III takes place in the fantasy world's mainland where a huge orc invasion is commencing.

Because the gameplay is open ended your player character actually has a choice; Do you defend your fellow humans against the orcs or do you turn traitor and fight with the bad guys?

Our brief GDC preview showed off the game's solid graphics which we were told would feature one huge world with no loading times. The gameworld itself is said to be three times the size of Gothic II and it showed when we saw our player character walking through areas and seeing huge outdoor vistas. Because the gameplay is open-ended there should be lots of replay value in Gothic III; much like Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion the game will feature lots of NPCs which may or may not help you depending on which side you are fighting on.

One aspect of the game that is being played up is Gothic 3's combat system. The developers stated that this new system will allow for "unprecedented control over melee attacks" and while we were not allowed to actually sit down and play the game for ourselves, the demo at GDC certainly looked like the combat system has gotten some improvements with some smooth combo moves being made on enemies with the character's weapons. We were told to expected over 50 monsters in the final game along with over 100 weapons and over 50 spells, so Gothic III shouldn’t lack for variety in this area. We were also told to expect a large amount of NPC dialogue and impressive AI as well.

The build we saw at GDC was still early but overall Gothic III is shaping up to be one of the more interesting solo RPGs coming out in 2006, but with Oblivion already setting the standard for this kind of game this year we have high expectations for Piranha Bytes' RPG follow-up. We can expect to see more of Gothic III at E3 in May before it ships to stores this fall.

Ali deluje mi da ce igra biti sasvim cool, ko ce samo toliko da ceka

Poenta je da ljudi traze bilo sta vezano za G3, a ovo im je najjednostavnije da snime (osim snapova)! :)

A sad malo za hard-core Gothic fanove :-devil-:

Q1 - Will there be like Spellforce2 same time to the normal release also a Collectors Edition with additional content available, or will this later be released?
Stefan: Surely we want to give our hardcore Gothic fans a Special Edition with extra content -> same time as the standard edition.
Q2 - From Gothic2 many Special Editions appeared late after release. Are there any news about a soundtrack-cd from KaiRo? Is it possible, that a Collectors Edition will be delivered with a map? Paper or real cloth?
Stefan: A map ? Hey, great idea... :) But why do you talk about a Special Edition and not the Standard Edition? :) OOOPPPPSSSSS Should´nt talk too much...
Soundtrack CD -> Kai creates so lovely music... it should be on a CD :) You will be able to buy after the Gothic release a normal Edition, a Special Edition and much, much more goodies for Gotihc3 -> and surely you won´t be able to oversee Gothic at your local dealer -> we will handle this. But that´s still a secret *againtoomuchtalking*
Q3 - Eagerly awaited - there seems to be a sleeper-mask as an amulett. Well, it seems reasonable to assume adding such a goodie to a reprint of the Collectors Edition. Or perhaps as a gimmick for a Gothic3-Collectors Edition?
Stefan: A sleepers mask as an amulett ? Nice idea... :) Let´s wait a bit, the future is Gothic!
Q4 - The CE from SpellForce 2 has also some exclusive clothes from the main character. Is providing items made exclusive for the Special Edition perhaps the starting point of a two-classes-society among the players? In your opinion, how far can you go especially with multiplayer-games without making buyers of the normal edition angry? Should the content of such Special Editions be limited to gear remote from the game to let the real game be the same for all people?
Johann: In this case I have to clearify something: The ingame items of Spellforce look absolutely marvelous, that´s true, but they are in no case "overpowered" or game-crucial. The opposite is true, on this level, the items demand, there are many better items for normal players.
World of Gothic: What will the package look like?
Stefan: Great. :)
Q5 - Perhaps a real box, with a relief (like Starcraft) or even a imprinted metal case (like "Return to Castle Wolfenstein")?
Stefan: Mayby :)
Q6 - How will the handbook looks like, only a pulp novel or perhaps a real bound hardcover book?
Stefan: Cheap versions are out of question. :)
Q7 - Is there a detailed roadmap for releasing Gothic 3? We know the term "milestones", where you have to reach a specific state of developement. Is there in conjunction a roadmap for the material to be released?
Stefan: We have always plans, we know, at which time we get material from the developers... sometimes the guys surprise us with even more and better material.
Q8 - We know some english-speaking people, who talk a little bit German and who played Gothic2 already in German. For this guys it would be a great help to be able to switch theire version to English, if translating some terms is too hard. To make a long story short, will there be a multi-lingual version of Gothic3?
Stefan: Comes time, comes Gothic :) Future IS Gothic, perhaps even multi-lingual *gg*
Q9 - From the developement of Gothic1 many anecdotes about bugs and features are well known - we only mention "KaiRo´s network-card". Will you give away some little stories about the G3-developement to the fans ? On GC there was told, that you use little wooden horses to check, if it´s possible to integrate riding horses in the game, perhaps someone could talk with Marvin about it!
Stefan: Surely we will talk about some developement stories after the game release, that´s something, the guys from Piranha Bytes will do with pleasure :)
Q10 - Are there any plans for special events at upcoming E3? Revolutionary new infos, that has been hold back till now, new trailers or similar things?
Stefan: On E3 we will defintely be present and show the latest version of Gothic3, but on GC in Leipzig we will rock you!
Q11 - We will organize a community-meeting at GC in Leipzig. If we invite you, would you come? For a barbeceau at the campfire?
Johann: If the ale is cold, the pork tasty and also nice women there, you can count on my steel blade.
Stefan: And JoWood is also there. :)

Gothic 3 interview, part I
Interview by Vault Dweller, posted on Wed 03 May 2006, 01:56:12
More info on Gothic III - More info on Piranha Bytes

1. Let's start at the beginning. How do you evaluate the first two Gothic games and the expansion? What do you see as strengths to build on and what as weaknesses to improve?

Kai Rosenkranz: The Gothic series has evolved. Since we started in 1997, we have constantly improved the Gothic games and eliminated many of the weak points from the first instalment. The original Gothic 1 established a certain atmosphere which became the typical "look and feel" of the series. Even though all the previous Gothic titles were very different in terms of mood and setting, we tried to maintain the fresh roughness and coolness of the world and its inhabitants. One of the most important features of all Gothic games is the lifelike gaming world and the realistic behaviour of both humans and creatures.

In order to be able to wipe out the weaknesses, we had to be very aware of what the players liked or disliked. In close cooperation with the community we identified the worst faux-pas (such as the incomprehensible interface or the gradual loss of tension in the later chapters) and passed them on to a major overhaul. Of course any of the Gothic games has its own strengths and weaknesses, and with each new instalment new boobs wormed their way into the design ;). But on the other hand, innovative features and the lifelike gaming world make up for these minor nuisances and the overall gaming experience pleased the majority of players.

2. It looks like Piranha Bytes is developing and evolving the once light RPG elements of Gothic 1 further with every game. Why the focus on role-playing?

Actually we haven't changed the depth of the RPG elements all that much. In some cases we had to add new numerical values in order to be able to realize new gameplay elements, but all in all the easy accessibility and the emphasis on the characters (not the numbers) remained unchanged. The level of difficulty was admittedly subject to heavy fluctuation throughout the series so far, but this was not achieved through adding weight to the RPG aspects of the games.

The opposite is the case. We have made the Gothic games easier to handle so as to make them accessible even for inexperienced RPG-players. In fact, we don't see the Gothic games as RPG games in the narrower sense. We rather consider them fantasy action adventures with certain role-playing enrichments.

3. Speaking of role-playing, how do you understand the term RPG? What features or design elements are important to you in an RPG and why?

"Role playing" actually means slipping into the role of another character and acting and behaving accordingly. A game that is focused on role playing has to be able to make the game players think "If I were him, what would I do next and how would I solve this problem?" and – of course - offer the freedom to realize their ideas. Most RPGs come with a character generation which allows to design and shape the protagonist to a certain degree. On that score, we go our own way and nail the players down on one character, our nameless hero. Thus we are able to tell his story and put great effort into the way our hero is presented. Still, the players have great freedom to do exactly what they want and influence his character development in the course of the adventure. Apart from this enormous degree of freedom, an RPG needs a captivating story to come to life. In a first person shooter, for example, an NPC doesn't need a background and a sophisticated simulation of human relations since his screen-time is usually smaller than ten seconds. An RPG needs all this to an extend greater than in any other genre.

4. So, the Orcs have won, and now you have a choice: to help the humans, to side with the Orcs, or to stay in the middle. Are we talking about a few separate quests or can one really play a large portion of the game enforcing the Orcish rule, for example?

Yes, that’s one of the things the player can do once he has allied with the Orcs. The first necessary step is to rise in their estimation. In some besieged enclaves the Orcs conduct arena fights for their amusement. The game player can take this opportunity to prove he's worth becoming one of them, and there are special missions he can accomplish for the Orcs.

7. Speaking of saving worlds, any chance for alternative endings, depending on the actions & choices of my characters.

We don't want to give too much away, so I hope a "yes" will do. If not, here comes an "absolutely". ;)

13. How does Gothic 3 handle choices & consequences? How important are choices and what would they affect? Would my character (not the player!) ever get a reason to regret a previously made choice?

Gothic 3 is all about choices in the first place. Yes, there are great sword fights, powerful magic, a lifelike gaming world... but yet choices are the main gameplay element. The player can literally shape the world and influence the story through the way he's handling things. Most decisions have to be made in the field of human relations. The way the player is treating others influences their attitude towards him, and thus their cooperativeness depends on the right choice of words. With a dexterous tongue the hero can even talk a whole city into a revolution. This can also backfire on him, of course. If he falls out of favour with someone, he will most likely not get useful hints or lucrative quests. And yes, if the whole world wants him dead, he might at last regret his choices.

The second part of the interview will be posted a week after E3 as per Piranha Bytes' wishes. You can expect a lot of new info about the game to be released shortly.
