GamesIndustry.biz has a story up outlining the details of Microsoft’s decision to drop an internal chip from its upcoming Natal motion control system. You should read the full post for the details, but in a nutshell, the chip, which would have been responsible for processing data regarding Natal’s ‘bone system’, has been replaced by a software solution.

“The full Natal hardware/sensor combo always looked like an expensive proposition in a market where Microsoft really needs to turn a profit,” said Digital Foundry editor Richard Leadbetter. “The notion of offloading the processing to the 360 CPU in the name of lower costs and easier upgradability makes sense.

Poslednja izmena:
Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata was offered the chance to sign up the device that became Project Natal - but turned it down as he didn't believe he could launch it at a mass-market price.

That's according to a top insider (and we mean top insider) at the platform holder's Japan HQ, who told us that Israel firm 3DV Systems showed an early demo of the technology to Iwata and other Nintendo bigwigs at the end of 2007.

Despite being impressed with the prototype, Iwata was reportedly unsold on it as a peripheral for Wii - leaving the door open for Microsoft to snap up the tech and its creator a year later.

"Iwata-San only ever invests in something he can guarantee will work for a Nintendo audience," the exec told us.

"3DV showed off a camera that detected motion in 3D, and had voice recognition - but Iwata-San was unconvinced he could sell it at a Nintendo price point. He also had some worries around latency during gameplay."

Peter Molyneux, the designer of Fable, said that Microsoft's Project Natal could be as game-changing as the introduction of the mouse to the PC.

Peter Molyneux is nothing but opinionated and he offers his assessment of the new motion control system for the Xbox 360, which is due out this fall. He likens Natal to another revolutionary human interface device, the mouse, and said that Natal could offer just as dramatic a shift in how we communicate with our computing devices. As the head of Lionhead Games (owned by Microsoft) and the Creative Director of Microsoft Game Studios, Molyneux's views on the subject of Project Natal have to be taken with a wheelbarrow of salt.

"I'm enthusiastic about the change that Natal gives," Molyneux said. "If you're thinking that Natal is going to give you another version of an FPS, you're just not thinking broadly enough." He went on:

After all, it was the invention of the mouse that gave us computing as it is today - not the invention of the microprocessor.

The mouse was the real revolution of the PC - not the Intel processor. And who's to say Natal couldn't end up creating something you and I can't even imagine now. It forces us to approach technology in a completely different way. Before the mouse, we only had the keyboard.

And things like Natal can be a bigger change.

Molyneux doesn't just blow sunshine regarding Natal. He cautions that designers may not be ready for its greatness at first, and that it may take time to shift to the new paradigm.

"The first wave of titles that come out will be really good and really polished and great, but they'll be kind of the obvious stuff," he said. "Even when a new console comes out it takes us a while to get used to it and get our heads around it. I think when something like Natal comes out it really takes a while."

Apparently Lois Lane has one hell of an Xbox 360. On this past Friday's Smallville episode, "Warrior", we got a look at the Xbox in question – and discovered it already has Project Natal! Yes, despite the fact that Project Natal isn't set to hit stores until the end of 2010, it got quite the bit of display on Smallville, as we watched Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack) play alongside a new superhero she's met -- "Warrior Angel"/"Stephen Swift" -- who is actually a transformed 12-year-old boy. The scene shows Chloe and Stephen playing Ricochet, as the two discuss Stephen's new powers.

Microsoft has finally confirmed that Israeli company PrimeSense is providing the 3D sensing and recognition technologies in Project Natal.

As Digital Foundry reported last June, PrimeSense provides the "brain" of the Natal camera, which is based on its PrimeSensor reference design.
