Jumpgate Evolution is a massively multiplayer online game currently being developed by NetDevil and published by Codemasters. The game is a sequel to Jumpgate: The Reconstruction Initiative and features a new graphics engine, all new assets and more accessible game play.
The game is currently aiming for a summer 2009 (Q2) release. A beta test phase is planned before the release but no exact dates have been made public yet. Players can apply for the beta test on the official website and as of November 10, 2008 there are over 150,000 applicants.
Gameplay
Nations
- The game will have features both old and new to the genre. The official website reports the following features:
- Dog-Fights
- Jumpgate Evolution offers a unique twitch-based combat system which allows you to challenge thousands of foes with your own skill and determination, offering the most exhilarating, jaw-dropping experience in online gaming to date.
- Game world setting
- Each jump will take you to exotic new locations with exciting new adventures. The universe is a vast and dangerous place and as old threats never die you’d be wise to remember this. Pirates, brigands, and opposing faction members are just some of the dangers present in the Jumpgate universe.
- Highly Accessible
- Although graphically stunning, Jumpgate is highly scaleable, allowing the game to run flawlessly on low end PCs. Jumpgate also offers joystick and peripheral support, adding to the immersive online experience.
- Huge Space Battles
- Fight against thousands of players online in epic large-scale player vs. player real-time battles.
- Three Playable Nations
- Become a pilot for any of the three playable nations. Join the corrupt, power-hungry Solrain Commonwealth, the disciplined, combat ready Octavian Empire or the spiritually-led Quantar Paths.
- Advanced Gameplay Systems
- Jumpgate Evolution offers limitless game play and content with a unique mission generator capable of generating thousands of fresh and immersive missions for players to embark on.
- Player driven world
- Players are given ultimate power as Jumpgate offers a fully immersive player driven economy. Protect a merchant vessel on its trade route by intercepting enemy players or answer a battle stations call for help by delivering them much needed supplies.
The game will feature the same factions (now called nations) as the previous installment of the game. However the passing of time and a significant space distortion event (called The Shift) has changed the nations, one more than the other. Still only three of the nations are playable.
The Solrain Commonwealth
A playable nation.
A once benevolent but now corrupt mercantile state featuring mercenaries, smugglers, powerful corporations and major (crime) syndicates.
Quantar Paths
A playable nation.
Once a unified nation, now dozen of cults (called Paths) unified only through the same fundamental belief that human destiny lies among the stars and that the Jumpgate network itself (called the Skein) will guide those who learn to listen.
The Octavian Empire
A playable nation.
An aggressive and militaristic nation driven to restore itself to former glory. The struggle for the currently vacant position of emperor is the cause of constant intrigue and a drain on the energy and resources of the nation but also the hope (and worry) of many for the restoration of Octavian dominance.
The Hyperial Protectorate
Once a rival to the Quantar nation they were defeated in a war. The Shift has left the Protectorate without any planet further reducing the nation's might and they now only own a single station.
The Amananth
Nobody knows much about the Amananth nation. They are the creators of a single fully automated station in pre-Shift space. In post-Shift space many abandoned stations have been found and the Amananth are now believed long dead. Many also believe post-Shift space to be the birthplace of the Amananth nation and that the Amananth were somehow responsible for the Shift itself.
Conflux
An alien race that ignores any form of communication and is aggressive to all nations. A war between the Conflux and the Humans brought the Humans almost to the brink of extinction. Although the humans fought them off the eventual outcome of the war is matter for speculation as at the height of the struggle the Shift pulled the human race away. The Conflux are also present in post-Shift space but the significance of their presence is as of yet unknown.
