THE MAKER OF printer ink, HP has decided that if people install Linux into its laptops, it won't be held respinsible if anything mechanical going wrong.

Enterprise.linux.com cites the case of Laura Breeden who bought a new Compaq Presario C304NR notebook from Best Buy in January.

She bought it because she wanted to use Ubuntu Edgy and was told by the people in the shop that the C304NR was "Linux ready."

However they didn't tell her that HP would void her warranty if she installed the open Source software.

Everything was working fine, until Breeden's keyboard started playing up. Keys started to stick and the space bar wouldn't always work. Not a software problem, nor one which was unlikely to be one, however HP said that it "does not honour the warranty under Linux".

They told her that she would have to remove Linux and reinstall Windows before they would think of fixing it. µ"

Pa nije time izgubila pravo na garanciju. Ovi iz HP-a traze samo da se komp na servis vrati sa onim sa cime je i isporucen. Jeste glup zahtev, ali joj garancija nije oduzeta.

Laura's problem will probably come to a satisfactory end: the return of the merchandise for a full refund, or a swap for a unit that is offered with Linux in the first place.

Pa nije time izgubila pravo na garanciju. Ovi iz HP-a traze samo da se komp na servis vrati sa onim sa cime je i isporucen. Jeste glup zahtev, ali joj garancija nije oduzeta.

Verovatno je problem u tome sto im je laksa dijagnostika odredjenog broja kvarova, ako je na masini Windows, a ne zele da ulazu u obuku kadrova koji bi sve to mogli da urade i pod Linux-om.

Mozda imaju gotov dijagnosticki softver pisan za win; mozda kao proizvod tretiraju hw zajednom sa tim oem sistemom koji su isporucili (i koji bi trebalo da bude vezan za njega). Pretpostavljam da bi mogli da fleshnu svoj neki windows na tu masinu radi dijagnostike, ali da sklanjaju njen linux prvo, pa rade sa windowsom, pa vracaju linux...? To uvecava duzinu rada, a radnike u servisu moraju da placaju za to vreme. Da je van garancije i servis placa korisnik, onda bi pretpostavljam prica bila drugacija.

Ma jasno mi je to, samo reinstall ne znaci da ja treba da im instaliram Win koji nisam ni dobio t.e. kupio. Odnosno, sto rece Silverglider "...da se komp na servis vrati sa onim sa cime je i isporucen." Ja sam ga kupio sa Dos-om, i tako bi im ga odneo (ne daj boze da imam potrebe za tim, pu-pu).
