Introduction

In order to pass the RHCE, it is often quite helpful to understand how to fail the RHCE. Here we discuss a few critical pointers.

Points of failure

Disrespect the exam Many existing RHCEs will tell you that the exam is easy. Feel free to talk about how easy it is after you have passed

Not asking questions If you do not understand something and do not ask questions about it, you will encounter a snowball effect (understanding less and less about future lessons).

Not understanding labs Most labs are essentially copy/paste. If you can type, you can get through the labs. However, understanding the concepts taught in the labs is the important part.

Memorizing is not learning This is a 100% hands on exam. It is impossible to memorize every command and every option that you will need to use. Concentrate on learning and understanding the concepts behind services and configurations.

Panicking The exam is time sensitive. This introduces a certain degree of pressure. If you panic you will make more mistakes. Trust in your ability and try to remain relaxed.

Being disorganized Sections of the exam involve performing multiple tasks, many of which are related. If you attempt to do these tasks in the order that they appear on the exam you will end up doing extra work and quite likely doing things in a more complex manner. Take in all the information provided, develop a plan of attack and execute.

Over firewalling Many tasks on the exam involve securing services. Keep in mind that a properly configured service that is blocked by a bad firewall rule will get zero points as it will appear unavailable. Someone always does this. Do not be that person.

Making assumptions The tasks on the exam should be taken verbatim. Do not read more into the requirements than what is written

Quitting If you have not completed a task and still have time, do not quit. The solution is in your head or in the documentation somewhere, be patient.
