During its quarterly fiscal results conference on Thursday, Western Digital reportedly admitted that it managed to significantly restore production capacities after the October 2011 flooding in Thailand.

"I am pleased to announce today that the recovery activities related to both WD operations and those of our supply chain partners impacted by the Thailand floods have reached a point where we now have the capability to adequately meet anticipated customer demand in the current quarter and beyond," said John Coyne, the CEO of Western Digital.

As customers are getting more and more frustrated with the artificial crisis in the hard drive market, WD is allegedly just 11% behind the usual level of shipments although that would be really tough to calculate.

This is because in this last quarter, WD is also counting the HDD shipments from the Hitachi HDD unit that it only bought in March last year. The increase of shipments is 55%, if we count in Hitachi made drives.

Even so, WD couldn’t possibly be 11% behind its normal level of shipments, as the 300% price increase that the HDD market has experienced lately has tempered the HDD demand so profoundly that with a 89% production level, WD would be overstocking right now.

It’s hard to decipher WD’s mandatory financial statements, when it’s clear that both it and Seagate are working hard to cover up their tracks.

We believe it won’t be long now until an official agency starts an investigation regarding the so-called HDD crisis.

Hard drive manufacturers Seagate Technology and Western Digital have reported great financial results after such a prolonged hard disk drive “crisis.”

There was always talk about the fact that hard disk drives are so cheap, that the profitability of the manufacturers is getting low enough to limit the R&D investments they would otherwise make.

Many industry insiders were talking about overstocking and lowering profits. The situation was bleak.

One year ago, Samsung wanted to get rid of their HDD division, despite the fact that the products developed there were quite good. The F1 and F3 lines of desktop HDD are very good performers to this day, and they’ve been since way back in 2008.

Seagate jumped at the opportunity and snatched Samsung’s hard drive division for almost 2 billion dollars, back in April 2011.

Hitachi was also doing quite alright. They had good mobile HDDs and the very successful 1000.C hard disk drive line that excelled when dealing with multi-threaded work. Still, the marketplace for HDDs was so difficult that they’ve announced they’ll be selling their hard drive division to Western Digital.

The Thailand flood came and went and we were left with the hard drive “crisis”. While the hard drives were almost never “out of stock” the prices increased even by 300%.

Months passed by, but there seemed to be no end to the hard drive crisis, despite the fact that both manufacturers were announcing the restoration of the plants affected by the waters.

In a report from earlier his year, we found out that Seagate even managed to increase its HDD shipments with around 2% when compared to the previous year. Where exactly was that “crisis?”

Now Seagate proudly announces it has decided to spend 2.5 billion dollars to repurchase a considerable amount of its outstanding ordinary shares. Spending 2.5 billion dollars less than a year after buying Samsung’s HDD division for another 2 billion doesn’t really seem like a company “suffering” from a “crisis.”

Western Digital, too, has just announced its fiscal third quarter financial results. Despite recently acquiring HGST (that’s Hitachi’s HDD division) in March last year and also “suffering” from a “difficult crisis,” they’ve made a net income of 146 million dollars, or 62 cents per share.

"Our third quarter performance demonstrates the potential of the new Western Digital, with just three and a half weeks of HGST results combined with the standalone WD business," said John Coyne, CEO of Western Digital.

By their reasoning: bad market plus low margins plus the HDD crisis equals big profits.

Good job if we may say. We finally have a humongous duopoly in the hard drive market too. This is probably the most desirable situation for the end-users paying 300% more money for last year's technology.

We shall now wait and see when the prices go back to where they were one year ago, if ever.
 
Sasvim je sigurno da je kriza veštački održavana i produbljivana, ako je ikada zaista i postojala. Ipak, na duže staze ovo će svima dobro doći jer se HDD industrija oporavila ovim prilivom novca.

Istina je da su godinama operisali blizu granice profitabilnosti, zbog čega su se veliki igrači i povukli, tako da je sve manje novca išlo u R&D i sve se više fušarilo kako bi se spustile cene (a održao profit). Pitanje je sada ko će im i kako stati na put kada više prave konkurencije ni nema (dvojica se lako dogovore).

Ono što je možda još dobro u celoj ovoj "krizi" je to što će nas naučiti da racionališemo sa storedžom. Nema više suludog gomilanja filmova, muzike i koječega - mada, sve to i postoji on-line. ;) A s obzirom da se NAND SSD-ovi povećanjem kapaciteta sve više zafarbavaju u ćošak, ko zna... možda je budućnost interesantnija nego što smo mislili. :)
 
Ti NAND SSD-ovi od 240+ GB su i dalje preskupi da bi bili iole interesantniji običnim consumer korisnicima, pa većina još uvek kupuje SSD-ove od 64 ili 128 GB, i to maksimalno 128 GB. Skupa je još ta SSD tehnologija, postoje neki nagoveštaji da je 2013. godina presudna za SSD, ali nešto sumnjam.


Što se tiče ove veštačke krize u sferi hard diskova, ne znam šta više da kažem, sve je rečeno gore na linkovima. Sada su WD i Seagate jedini proizvođači hard diskova na tržištu i to svakako nije dobro, jer cene teško da će ikad više biti onako niske kao pre poplava na Tajlandu...svakako da će cene pasti ali nikako ne toliko nisko kao nekada.
 
Zar nije Toshiba i dalje u prici, mada samo tu i tamo za laptop diskove?
 
Pa koliko znam, Toshiba nikad i niej bila vodeći igrač na polju proizvodnje i plasiranja hard diskova, uglavnom su pravili diskove za laptopove, za desktop nešto nisam videop da su ikad bili nešto puno zastupljeni.

Možda se oni sada, kao treći igrač, malo prošire i iskoriste ovaj vakumm, dok WD i Seagate u potpunosti ne integrišu u sebe Hitachi i Samung,pa tako će, možda, opstati nešto kolača i za njih. Mada sumnjam.
 
Toshiba je OEM proizvodjac, u glavnom za svoje laptop i desktop recunare.

O ovu dvojicu (WD i SG) treba dobro po usima...kazniti za ocigledno vestacku "krizu" i namestanje cena.
 
Ne treba ih biti po ušima, nego da ih vlasti njihovih država i EU uslovi : ako neće da budu progonjeni zbog veštačke krize, zaradili su sada puno para i tek će zaraditi do kraja godine, pa nek im kažu ovako: " gospodo, razumeli smo da ste ostvarili ogroman profit od tzv. krize...ako je tako očekujemo od vas normalizaciju proizvodnje, sniženje cena na prihvatljiv nivo i dalje ulaganje i nove tehnologije koje će doprineti da se granice kapaciteta prošite na 10 TB i više "


Ja bih ih tako uslovio, dakle nek ulažu sada, imaju para, obogatili su se, pa ajde gospodo, pokažite šta znate i oduševite nas u narednom periodu sa novim inovacijama !
 
To bi trebalo da rade bez obzira.. tj. da imaju konkurenciju - takmicili bi se sa cenama, kapacitetom, brzinama sa cime god mogu.

Ovako su napravili lepo duopol pa lade jaja. I jos se kopiraju medjusobno na ustrb korisnika: smanjili garanciju na dve godine.

Cudno mi sto evropska unije nije jos reagovala...ili smo to samo mi ludi da tu nesto smrdi?
 
Prosao i taj jun, dosao i avgust ali ja nesto ne vidim da su cene osetno manje...?

Evo kako su izgledale stvari u Svajcarskoj u proteklih godinu dana, manje vise slicno je u Evropi.
Valuta je svajcarski franak i period od godinu dana, svi diskovi su sata3.

Očigledno je da je ovaj duopol odradio svoje, šteta što je Evropska Komisija uopšte dozvolila prodaju Samsunga i Hitachija, tj. njihovih hard disk odeljenja. Toshiba se i ne smatra ozbiljnim konkurentom, jer ona proizvodi isključivo 2.5" hard diskove, a kobajagi imaju planove za desktop hardove tek u 2013. godini.

Sada glavni igrači zagađuju pare kao nikad pre... :mad:

Kako Evropska komisija da zabrani prodaju jedne korejske i jedne japanske kompanije dvema americkim?? :zgran:
 
Pa valjda se i oni nešto pitaju, znam da daju neko svoje mišljenje i da se sastaje njhov anti-monopolski tim nekoliko puta godišnje. Na to sam mislio. EU ipak ima dosta uticaja u svetu, čak i u Aziji i Americi, bez obzira što je trenutna kriza oko evra. Ta kriza se malo preuveličava, što ide u korist Americi i Kini.

Није ни мени логично, ал' ако се добро сећам скоро су давали своје мишљење када је Гугл куповао Мототолу :)
 
Ne pitaju se nista, a kada daju misljenje ono nije obavezujuce! Profesionalno se bavim EU i medjunarodnim odnosima 12 godina i sasvim odgovorno tvrdim da nemaju apsolutno NIKAKAV uticaj na poslovne transakcije privrednih subjekata koji nisu sa sedistem u EU. Kada je KEU klepila po usima MS vise puta, to se desilo zbog toga sto prema misljenju DG Trade, MS je pokusao da iskoristi svoj polozaj i monopolizuje trziste u EU. Dakle,m mogu da uticu samo na poslovanje tih kompanija na zajednickom EU trzistu, van toga nista!

Posto su opet bile poplave u okruzenju (Filipini), osecam da ce opet da iskoriste tu zvaku za cene HDD-ova :)
