I tested the iBasso DC02 using a few headphones, including the Moondrop A8, Sennheiser HD 6XX and Tin HiFi P1. I mainly used the iBasso DC02 with my notebook, desktop PC and Shanling M2X.
Despite the output power being rated as low, I was able to get a decent volume out of the HD 6XX even if I was using the DC02 at 35% of its volume. That came as a surprise to me, though the device was then not really able to drive the HD 6XX correctly as bass and highs were a bit lacking and not precisely controlled. They sounded much more open, too, when using them with more powerful amplification (e.g. Topping DX7), so that’s another thing to keep in mind if planning to use the DC02 with high-impedance cans.
Background is black despite power not being clean (other DACs have background noise using the same PC and cable). This is a sign that iBasso did good in the design of the device.
The main limit of the iBasso DC02 is its output power which makes it unable to drive headphones with high impedance and/or low sensitivity. Apart from this I would say that it is a perfectly fine mobile DAC, with a good level of detail and a good speed. In terms of tuning, it seems to me like it is warmer than other sources, or at least there is a bit less presence in the upper midrange and treble. It’s a very slight difference, so small it could be just an impression of mine, but I’ve been hearing it consistently and that’s why I write about it (and it has to be noticed that I usually don’t hear differences in solid-state amplifiers).
I must say, I had low expectations going into subjective evaluation but I was proven wrong. With Sennheiser HD-650 at max volume, sound quality was very nice. Granted, there was no headroom as you almost had to operate it all the time at max volume but still, it sounded quite acceptable. This is definitely not a give in these ultraportable DAC and headphone amps.
Switching to Hifiman HE-400i was even more satisfying. I could now listen at one or two notches below max. Fidelity was excellent and music quite enjoyable.
I can only conclude that the MU2 Plus is able to handle momentary peaks in music better than its steady state power measurements show. To wit, on one of the bass heavy tracks with Dragonfly Red would constantly mute on each bass note but not the MU2 Plus. It rode through them as if there were not there.
At least for headphone users E11K looks like a potent headphone amp.
Larger soundstage of E11K jumped at me imediately, the sound is projected further away, everything is even more airy , stereo image is more precise and slowly becoming 3D.
It sounds deeper and larger, spatiality is enhanced.
The intimate sound of E10K disapears on E11K, sound is more distant now, as I
would be in the 10th row of the concert hall compared to 3rd row with E10K.
Besides this I hear a slightly less sweet sound, more natural and more neutral.
Mid freqs, especialy voices are not coming in your face and I don’t hear that slight grain. Voices are not on forefront anymore and are not as syrupy.
E11K offers a sound that is more closely to the original recording than with E10K, I personaly like E11K presentation a little bit more. All in all those are all major differences that I can detect.
