Behind the enhanced picture quality that fans will start to experience this week, the introduction of 4K HDR marks an important milestone to modernize ESPN’s content distribution pipeline from the ground up.

Delivering 4K HDR full-time on ESPN and ESPN2 required coordinated investment across every stage of the signal chain — from how content is captured in Bristol to how it reaches a fan’s screen.

The rollout will include all ESPN productions of Monday Night Football, NBA, and NHL games, along with select college football and US Open tennis events. The infrastructure will also support some of the network’s biggest upcoming productions, including Super Bowl LXI.

Bitrate Range: The stream typically holds a stable 22–24 Mbps during live game action. It can dynamically dip to around 16–18 Mbps during logos transitions or high-compression crowd shots.

For a good streaming experience, ESPN recommends at least 5 Mbps for HD content and 25 Mbps for 4K UHD content. A stable internet connection with these speeds or better is crucial for smooth playback.

Tehnički sve je upscaled sa 1080p HDR. 🙂
Pre je bilo 720p u 60 FPS, sad je tu veća rezolucija, veći bitrate, HDR i možda najvažnije što će oni raditi upscale na 4K, a ne jeftini televizori korisnika.

ESPN’s Bristol, CT, campus now operates with a massive SMPTE ST 2110 core, while key production and master-control environments are being transitioned to 1080p HDR. From there, ESPN can upconvert the signal to 4K for distribution to supported platforms.

Customer end devices are going to upconvert to 4K anyway. Why don’t we just control our destiny and put it out there at our standard and our specification, at the level of quality that we’re comfortable with?

Does this rollout change the conversation around using more native 4K cameras or other 4K production tools at the event level?

There’s more to consider to pivot to native 4K production. The bandwidth required and the limitations of the I/O in 4k are challenges. If you’re doing a significant event where there are already 50 cameras or 100 cameras and then you go to 4K, the bandwidth requirements are going to increase significantly.

We’d love to see more, but it becomes an economics question more than anything.

Zanimljivo probao i prepoznaje 4K HDR, a režim slike TV sam prebaci u IMAX 🙂

Ono što je najbolje u celoj priči da će i ostali konkurenti i veliki igrači morati da isprate ovu tranziciju na 4K tako da će biti mnogo više sportskih sadržaja u boljem kvalitetu!

Sve u svemu zanimljivo, NBA predsezona počinje za 2 dana, a sezona za 18 pa ćemo videti u praksi kako to izgleda. 🙂
