First CPU said to be 6-core Gulftown - Update: First benchmark results

Intel has just revealed the new Core name pattern but now there are rumors about possible CPUs of the Core i9 series. The 32 nm 6-core Gulftown is said to be an appropriate candidate.

Some days ago Intel put an end to the rumors and officially introduced the Core i3 and Core i5 pattern. But now new rumors say that Intel's 6-core CPU Gulftown will be traded under the name Core i9. The current Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors will be the Core i3 family.

Gulftown is said to go hit the retail markets by the name Core i9 and represents the upper end of the performance array. The 6-core CPU is said to get all the features of Bloomfield, HT for 12 cores and a 50 percent bigger level 2 cache - all in all 12 MiByte. The Gulftown or Core i9 are said to be compatible to the socket LGA 1366 and X58 motherboards and first models are expected in Q1 2010. For more information about Gulftown see Intel introduces 32 nm CPU - More details on the Nehalem successor.

Update: July 24, 2009
Now Fudzilla wants to have learned from Intel partners that the 6-core processor Gulftown, which is expected for early 2010, will be the first Core i9 processor. It is said that the processor will have a 32 nanometer architecture as well as the full feature set including SMT and Turbo Mode. The current X58 chipset with the LGA 1366 is supposed to be used as a chassis for the Gulftown. As already mentioned the processor will have six physical cores and thus twelve logical cores (SMT) and the L3 cache will be increased by 50 percent in comparison to the Core i7 Bloomfield. An integrated graphics unit is not included at first says the report.

This set of information matches with the details available already. Therefore it is expected that the official specification won't differ much when Intel releases them.

Update: July 31, 2009
Two Xeon W5590 processors have been tested by "JCornell” with the multi threaded benchmark Wprime v2.00. Due to SMT the system with its two 6-core CPUs had 24 virtual cores. The engineering samples were running at 2.4 GHz and delivered benchmark results which a common Core i7 would only if clocked to noticeably higher frequencies. The 32M test has been finished in6.177 seconds and the 1024M test was done after 145.688 seconds.

For comparison: A Core i7 with eight virtual cores usually has to run at 4 GHz (32M) or 5 GHz (1024M) to reach similar results. "JCornell” posted the benchmark results at the Coolaler Forum.

First review of Core i9 Gulftown 6 core CPU posted

Intel plans to bring the 6-core CPU codenamed Gulftown based on 32-nm Westmere architecture to the desktop platform soon. Chinese website HKEPC has posted the first review of the upcoming CPU. They have compared the CPU to its 4 core 8 thread Bloomfield brother. The best news out of this review comes from the temperature and power consumption section. The use of 32-nm process has allowed this 6-core CPU to have lesser power consumption and temperature than the currently available 4 core Bloomfield CPU based on 45-nm process. Gulftown registers 127.8/159.9 W on Idle/Load Power meter while Bloomfield scores 131.4/163.4W on the same Idle/Load state. Gulftown has idle/load temperatures of 38.4/52.2 C while Bloomfield has 39.2/55.4 C.

Bloomfield gets a PCMark Vantage score of 5241 while Gulftown gets 5297. This is the limitation of the PCMark Vantage as it is only made to scale for 4 cores 8 threads.

Intel begins production of 32nm Westmere processors

Were you so impressed by the reviews of Intel's latest Lynfield Core i7 chips that you ran out and paid the early-adopter premium to buy one? Your period of superiority hasn't lasted long, dear reader, with the company announcing initial production of 32nm processors has begun. It's taken many years (and a $7 billion manufacturing investment) to get these Westmere chips onto silicon, with the Clarkdale (desktop) and Arrandale (notebook) lines expected to start showing up in over-sized cardboard boxes before the end of the year. What's next for 45nm chips, like those new Lynnfields? A slow fade to obsolescence, as they're likely to be the last of the breed -- but they at least can take pride in knowing they were the king of their class; a class that resulted in a whopping 200 million sales. Check out the video after the break for a some silicon and cleanroom action.

Intel Gulftown Processors Coming with Redesigned Heatsinks

Intel has recently showcased its six-core Gulftown processor at the IDF 2009 in San Francisco, and we notice the stock cooler has been redesigned for more convenience and better durabilities.

All the current Intel processors are equipped with standard heatsink with vertical blowing, which can’t provide efficient cooling performance for the extreme overclockers. Additionally, the push-pin is believed to be a horrible design, as it demands you to be very careful when mounting, and it’s not durable at all due to the plastic material.

Different from the previous design, the fresh cooler employs tower design with horizontal blowing for enhanced airflow, and it features four copper heatpipes. There is no pesky Push-pin any more, as you can install with screws.

The PWM fan is fixed and protected by the shield, and you can see a cover marked with “Extreme Edition”.

Hopefully we’ll see such heatsinks on more Intel CPU models in the coming future.

Core i9 With Four Radeon HD 5870's Break 3DMark Vantage Records

The old 3DMark Vantage record set by k|ngp|n of P42968 marks has been blown away by overclocker Shammy. The previous record was held with an Intel Xeon W3540 at 5048 MHz with four GTX 285s in SLI. The new record of P52578 was set by a Core i9 at 6189 MHz (6155 MHz for the other records) with HTT on and four Radeon HD 5870s in CrossFire, with core clocks of 1300 MHz and a shader clocks of 1250 MHz. All of the other vantage records were broken, namely the Entry, Performance, High and Extreme presets. The images are in order of preset from Entry to Extreme.

Ma dal je ovo moguce !?!?!?! :zgran::zgran::zgran:

32nm, 1.8V i 6 GHz... covece kao da sam juce kupovao 90nm procesore :) Bas tehnologija leti.
Impresivan rezultat, nema sta.

Karamba!!! ***.koja brzina...sunce ti....
