Since AMD moved to socket AM2, many users that are seeking for a better CPU cooler are left out in the dark. Although previously all three sockets 745, 939 and 940 (AMD K8) shares similar CPU heatsinks mounting, socket AM2 is totally different than anything else we have seen. This is a bad news for you especially if you are moving from socket 939 platform to the AM2 platform. Although some CPU heatsinks such as Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro and non-Pro will fit on socket AM2, most users without a compatible CPU heatsink will want to purchase a new CPU heatsinks, especially if they are into overclocking.
However, considering that the debut of Intel Core 2 Duo (a.k.a Conroe) is just around the corner, it would be a wise choice to grab a CPU cooler that supports socket LGA775 as well. Previously we have tested and reviewed a large list of socket LGA775 CPU heatsinks ranging from various manufacturers but only a few of them are compatible with AMD socket 939, but none supports socket AM2. Although some were tested to work with socket AM2 with a custom retention bracket, you will still have to purchase the required bracket if you want cross-platform compatibility. So if you are in the midst of the above scenario, or looking for a powerful cooler for your current socket 939 or AM2 and maybe later move to LGA775, then we might just have the right solution for you. Enter the Big Typhoon VX by Thermaltake.
The Big Typhoon CPU cooler was a bit hit for Thermaltake and it was hailed as one of the top performing heatsinkfan in its class. It uses six heatpipes and a single 120mm fan which offers both performance and silence. On the contrary, the original Big Typhoon is pretty tough to install as motherboard removal is required, and it does not support socket AM2 (but it supports AMD K7 though). So without further ado, let us check out the Big Typhoon VX.
