Windows 7 build 7077 is out in the wild and easily available on major torrent sites. It is now expected that Microsoft will name 7100 as the RC build and builds 7105 onwards will be the ongoing development branched towards RTM. There are many rumors why Microsoft Skips 7100 to 7105 directly. It’s not the first time they already skipped from 6956 to 7000 and then the reserved 7001 and 7002 builds for the beta to RC period. it’s likely that build 7077 is the RC that will be modified to 7100 and distributed widely in May. At the same time, Microsoft has built a mechanism into Windows 7 RC designed to block upgrades from Beta Build 7000 and pre-RC development milestones to full RC, but also provided a technique to circumvent the limitation.
When you try to upgrade a pre-RC build you will find that you’re not able to and setup will tell you and you can then exit gracefully. You can install as a clean installation and use the Windows Easy Transfer feature as well (run this from your current installation of course) if you wish to move your accounts, settings, files, and more. You need to follow the trick when you are upgrading from build 70XX series to build 71XX series.
Here’s what you can do to bypass the check for pre-release upgrade :
- Download the ISO as you did previously and burn the ISO to a DVD.
- Copy the whole image to a storage location you wish to run the upgrade from (a bootable flash drive or a directory on any partition on the machine running the pre-release build).
- Browse to the sources directory.
- Open the file cversion.ini in a text editor like Notepad.
- Modify the MinClient build number to a value lower than the down-level build. For example, change 7100 to 7000 (see picture).
- Save the file in place with the same name.
- Run setup like you would normally from this modified copy of the image and the version check will be bypassed.”
