Astronomers have officially confirmed the third known interstellar object in history: 3I/ATLAS – and that letter "I" stands for interstellar.
Racing in at over 152,000 mph (244,620 km/h), this mysterious body is likely a comet and could be as large as 12 miles (19-mile) wide. It’s on a hyperbolic trajectory, meaning it came from deep space and will never return.
Spotted in late June and confirmed by July 2, this cosmic outsider is now barreling toward the Sun. Its closest approach will come in October, when it swings by at twice Earth’s distance from the sun and brushes close to Mars.
3I/ATLAS is not a threat, but it’s a rare glimpse at something born in a completely different solar system. Scientists are scrambling to observe it with telescopes across Earth and maybe even from Mars.
This is only the third time we’ve witnessed an object from interstellar space fly through our cosmic backyard. Don’t miss your chance to follow the journey.
