The Soinpoint F3 combines the high data density of the F2 series with 7,200 rpm. Samsung just introduced the new hard drive series.
Up to now Samsung offered two hard drive F series: the Spinpoint F1, which had 333 gigabyte platters at max and spun them at 7,200 rpm as well as the Ecogreen F2, which has 500 a higher data density, due to the 500 GB platters, but was running at 5,400 rpm only.
Samsung now combined the higher data density of the 500er platters with the higher speed and introduced the Samsung Spinpoint F3. Due to the technical advantages the new hard drive should beat the performance of the F1 and the F2 Ecogreen to a noticeable degree; Samsung notes up to 30 percent. The F2 will be kept in the product array, while the F1 will be replaced by the F3 in the long term. The first device is the 500 gigabyte version HD502HJ with one platter and 16 miByte cache. Samsung set the recommended retail price to 59 Euros.
In August the terabyte model HD103SJ (2 platters, 32 MiByte cache) is supposed to follow for 79 Euros. Bit by bit the F3 series will be growing up to 2 terabyte. The slower F2 Ecogreen is currently available with 1.5 terabyte - only western Digital offers a 2 terabyte device with 5,400 rpm. Samsung plans F3 versions with 750, 320, 250 and 160 GiByte that will have 8 to 16 MiByte cache and smaller platters of course.
All F3 hard drives are working with the common SATA 3 GBit/s interface. The successor (codename: SATA 3) with twice the speed is note mentioned in Samsung's announcement.
