Nvidia losing support from motherboard makers

Is Nvidia about to exit the chipset business?

We're hearing more and more rumours about Nvidia's chipset business and how the company is losing support from the motherboard manufacturers and according to a story on The Inquirer it now looks like even the really big guys are pulling out.

Although Charlie appears to mostly have based his story on the lack of products on various motherboard manufacturers websites, but considering how few high-end Nvidia boards were on display during Computex, this is hardly a surprise.

We've confirmed with some of our sources that at least some of the companies in Charlie's list have indeed pulled the plug on their 790i boards and some even went as far as cancelling all future Nvidia based motherboard products.

The word on the street is even more worrying, as we're hearing rumours of Nvidia considering to pulling out of the chipset business altogether. Considering that Intel didn't grant Nvidia a QPI license, what is left for Nvidia's chipset business? Not much, that's for sure and with the announcement last month that Nvidia will use the nForce 200 bridge chip as a solution for adding SLI to the X58 platform, these rumours might not be too far from the truth.

There's a problem with the nForce 200 solution though, as not only will it add cost to the motherboards, but an additional chip will use up space on the PCB which requires a layout change and the nForce 200 chipset runs extremely hot and as such needs extra cooling. All of this talks against this solution as becoming popular with the motherboard manufacturers, despite what Nvidia wants to make us believe.

There might still be a market for Nvidia in the lower end of the market, but it's very hard to make any money here as the margins are cut throat and the competition is fierce. Besides, there's little point for Nvidia to produce low-end chipsets, especially considering the costs involved versus the revenues that could be had.

It looks like it's a dark time ahead for Nvidia, but hopefully it's other product ranges can make up for what will possibly be lost with the chipset divisions demise.

Puzzled, we asked Nvidia Platform Products PR chief Bryan Del Rizzo to weigh in. Del Rizzo's response came swiftly and left little open for interpretation:

1. The story on Digitimes is completely groundless. We have no intention of getting out of the chipset business.
2. In fact, our MCP business is as strong as it ever has been for both AMD and Intel platforms:
1. Mercury Research has reported that the NVIDIA market share of AMD platforms in Q2 08 was 60%. We have been steady in this range for over two years.
2. SLI is still the preferred multi-GPU platform thanks to its stellar scaling, game compatibility and driver stability.
3. nForce 790i SLI is the recommended choice by editors worldwide due to its compelling combination of memory performance, overclocking, and support for SLI. . . .
3. We're looking forward to bring new and very exciting MCP products to the market for both AMD and Intel platforms.

"Nvidia said to be quitting chipset business
Ricky Morris, DIGITIMES, Taipei [Friday 1 August 2008]
Nvidia has decided to throw in the towel and quit the chipset business, sources close to the situation at one of Taiwan's top motherboard makers have revealed. As the story is told, Nvidia called a meeting earlier this week with its motherboard partners to gauge support for it continuing to develop chipsets in the future.
The motherboard makers' response? Silence.
However, Nvidia has responded to the news by saying its completely groundless. The company stated that it has no intention of getting out of the chipset business, according to Michael Jong, senior director of corporate marketing for Nvidia APAC.
Jong added that Nvidia is looking forward to bringing new and very exciting MCP products to the market for both AMD and Intel platforms.
The sources claim that Nvidia will probably transfer the chipset team to work on GPU projects. On the motherboard makers' side, some makers have already canceled upcoming high-end motherboard projects based on the nForce 7-series chipset.
The loss of its chipset business would have a significant impact on Nvidia's GPU business in the short-term. Reception to the nForce 200 chip (BR04) which will enable SLI technology on Intel X58 motherboards has been lukewarm at best, with many makers saying they will not bother adding the chip on their boards. This means Nvidia needs to find a way of licensing and enabling multi-GPU support on motherboards using Intel and/or AMD chipsets fast. Otherwise it will have to cede the top-end of the graphics card market to AMD, which now has the benefit of Crossfire.
The news would also debunk any recent speculation that Apple will be adopting Nvidia chipsets for its upcoming notebook products. It would be unfortunate if Apple really has poured water on the close relationship it has built with Intel over the past few years, only to have its new best friend exit the market before products are even announced."

NVIDIA Denies Reports That It Will Leave Chipset Business

NVIDIA has been making the news quite a bit in the past few days
However, earlier today, reports began to spring up stating that NVIDIA would
drop its 790i motherboards and leave the chipset business altogether. The
reports cited "sources" close to top Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers.

NVIDIA recently contacted DailyTech to squash the information regarding it
leaving the chipset business. NVIDIA's Brian Burke made it clear that NVIDIA's
chipset business is stronger than ever and touched on these three points:

* Mercury Research has reported that the NVIDIA market share of AMD
platforms in Q2 08 was 60%. We have been steady in this range for over
two years.
* SLI is still the preferred multi-GPU platform thanks to its stellar scaling,
game compatibility and driver stability.
* nForce 790i SLI is the recommended choice by editors worldwide due to
its compelling combination of memory performance, overclocking, and support
for SLI.

Burke went on to say that "we're looking forward to bringing new and very
exciting MCP products to the market for both AMD and Intel platforms."

While NVIDIA has made it clear that it has no intention of packing up and
leaving the chipset business, the jury is still out on whether Apple will use
NVIDIA chipsets in upcoming products.

nisam to "uhvatio".
