Well this one came out of the blue! At least to me.. ATI seems to have released a new official set of drivers for their Radeon 9700 PRO graphics cards! These new drivers (Catalyst 7.77) are WHQL and they are found for Win9x/ME (4.13.01.9066) and Win2k/XP (6.13.10.6178). It's kinda odd that the Win2k and WinXP drivers are the same file, but I won't start asking why! Here's the blurb on the drivers:
This issue affects RADEON 9700 PRO 128MB using CATALYST™ 02.2 and CATALYST™ 02.3 under Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP.
The system may lock up or display corruption in certain scenes when playing the following Direct3D games:
Battlefield 1942
Mafia
The Thing

are Microsoft Certified on Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows Millenium for RADEON 9700 Series graphics adapters

There is no word if they work with the other Radeon series of cards (e.g. 8500/LE, 7200 etc), but I'm downloading them to get to the .inf file for more info.
Anyway, if you have probs in games with your R9700 PRO, grab these new babies! AFAIK you do not need to install the ATI "driver patch" (released about a week ago) if you have these new drivers installed.
So, if you want to have'em, click here. Oh and the download speed is unbelievable S-L-O-W!
