If you have a program that allows you to make individual settings for unsharp masking, try these settings as a starting point. They clear up haze amazingly. Amount 30-Radius 60-Threshold 1. These settings don't really sharpen, they CLEAR things up.

BigRed450's Excellent Sharpening Steps (PS7}
1 - Open image in PS7

NOTE: If your image seems a little rough or jaggy click Filter>Noise>Despeckle first to smooth the image out a little before you start this process.....

2 - Filter>Sharpen>Unsharp Mask - Set as follows:
Amount - 500
Radius - 0.2
Threshold - 0

3 - Edit>Fade Unsharp Mask - select luminosity from blend mode in Fade USM dialogue box. 100% opacity.

4 - Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur - Set Radius - 2.1

5 - Edit>Fade Gaussian Blur - select color from blend mode in Fade Gaussian Blur dialogue box. 100% opacity.

If you are using jpg format and have jaggies at this point add....

6 - Filters>Noise>Dust and Scratches - Radius- 1.0 Threshold- 0

Steve S.'s Tip:
Create a new layer. Select the Gradient tool and make sure the Linear Gradient is selected. Set the two colors to black and white. Set the Mode to Multiply. You can adjust the Opacity later.
When the gradient tool is selected, your cursor should look a +.
Place the cursor near the top of the pic and click/drag a line down the image. You can hold the Shift key to constrain the line to vertical. A long line will spread the grad over a wider area. A short line will cause an abrupt change.
You can play around with it to get the effect you want. Adjust the Opacity setting accordingly. The nice thing is that you don't have to keep hitting Undo. You can just drag a new line and it will undo the previous one.
You also don't have to start the cursor at the top. If you're doing a shot of a sunset over the ocean, you may want to start the line closer to the horizon. Dragging a short line would be good here because of the sharp horizon line
