Mountain View, California-based Google will officially launch its highly anticipated Google Me social service sometime in the Fall. The information comes directly from Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who spoke yesterday at the Google Zeitgeist 2010 conference in Scottsdale, Arizona. Alas, it appears that Google Me will not be a completely new social network of its own. Instead, Google will integrate social-networking elements into its existing core products, revealed Schmidt. YouTube is rumored to be one of the products to incorporate those social elements.
Google Me will apparently allow users to access their information from other social services such as Twitter and Flickr. The company is also looking to convince Facebook to open up its data to Google Me users in the same way that Google allows Facebook users to access services such as Gmail to see whether or not their contacts are also on the popular Palo Alto, California-based social networking site.
Schmidt is quoted as saying:
“We’re trying to take Google’s core products and add a social component
If you think about it, it’s obvious. With your permission, knowing more about who your friends are, we can provide more tailored recommendations. Search quality can get better.”
It’s also reported that the upcoming Google Games hub will play an important role on the new Google Me service.
It’s currently unknown when exactly in the Fall Google Me will be launched. Additionally, it’s not clear how successful the product will be. Over the years, Google has attempted to launch several social networking service that have failed to take flight. The most recent example is Google Buzz, which was plagued with privacy concerns as soon as it was introduced to the public.
