WE'VE BEEN DIGGING around on Taiwanese shores for more details about AMD's RS880 chipset and have managed to pluck some 3DMark-06 benchmarking goodies from the golden sands.

The RS880, sporting AMD's new Radeon HD 4200 graphics core with integrated DX10.1 graphics, is purportedly close to 15 per cent faster than anything comparable currently on the market and also supports the firm's Stream tech [at least something does - Ed].

Our Taiwanese oyster sauces claim that RS880 is able to reach just a smidgen under 1,800 in 3DMark-06, although our satellite datastream was interrupted before we could ascertain the exact platform. In the absence of better information, however, we'll assume that this figure was measured on a Phenom II X4 955 system with 8GB of DDR3 RAM.

[We'll pause here while we wait for a phone call from Austin to correct the details we're reporting for an unannounced product.]

Checking the annals of Inq lore, we found Jen Hsun's 2004 speech about the amazing power of the then market leading NV40/6800 GPU. For comparison's sake, the GeForce 6800 used to score just over 1,500 in 3DMark-06, with ATI's standalone video card, the X800XL, clocking at just over 1,730.

Getting that kind of performance would have set punters back a not-insignificant $300 in those days, but that was then and nowadays, it's simply included in the chipset for free. Now that's what we call progress, DAAMIT!

Our leaky Taiwanese bucket has also managed to spill that we can expect the RS880 launch to take place in the last week of August. Word is that Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC will be making the part initially and the production ramp has already started, at least at a minimal level to fulfill 2H09 orders. But don't be surprised if, come 2010, Globalfoundries shows its claws and start competing for these parts on its 28nm process.

Anyhow, once our exclusive launch party tickets come through, we'll let you know.
