The stock rose over 6% on Friday after Evercore analyst C. J. Muse raised his 12-month price target for the stock to $250. According to the analyst, investors have not yet realized NVIDIA’s growth potential in the AI (artificial intelligence) space. In the research report, Muse stated, “We are only at the cusp of AI’s growth potential and Nvidia is creating THE AI computing industry standard.”
According to Muse, NVIDIA GPUs (graphics processing units) can be used for AI applications such as autonomous driving. Currently, NVIDIA’s graphics cards are used for Bitcoin, the cryptocurrency. NVIDIA is one of the leaders in the autonomous vehicle space, and its level-3 autonomous car platform will be available in Tesla’s (TSLA) latest models by the end of 2017.
TITAN V’s Volta architecture features a major redesign of the streaming multiprocessor that is at the center of the GPU. It doubles the energy efficiency of the previous generation Pascal™ design, enabling dramatic boosts in performance in the same power envelope.
As mentioned earlier, NVIDIA is unsurprisingly pushing this as a compute accelerator card, especially considering that Titan V features tensor cores, and keeping the TITAN branding as opposed to GeForce TITAN. But there are those of us who know better than to assume people won’t drop $3000 to use the latest Titan card for gaming, and while gaming is not the primary (or even secondary) focus of the card, you also won't see NVIDIA denying it. In that sense the Titan V is going to be treated as a jack-of-all-trades card by the company.
To that end, no gaming performance information has been disclosed, but NVIDIA has confirmed that the card uses the standard GeForce driver stack. Now whether those drivers have actually be optimized for the GV100 is another matter entirely;
The card is available at $3000 for direct purchase. It should go without saying, of course, that you shouldn’t buy this for gaming – it won’t be very good at it, as the card is built to lead in machine learning and scientific development.
