Announcing DIP 5 - Blockchain Users

In Dash and many other cryptocurrencies, users currently send a payment to an address composed mainly of a cryptographic hash. This hash is by its random nature very hard to remember for a user and provides no mechanism to send payments without first being provided an address by the recipient. Most mainstream payment systems provide a simple method of paying a person or business without requiring knowledge of their account details (frequently via a username or email address). This DIP proposes adding a similar friction-reducing mechanism to Dash while also enabling more advanced user features that are secured by the blockchain.

Introducing Long Living Masternode Quorums

https://blog.dash.org/introducing-long-living-masternode-quorums-76ea8b23a85a

The first and probably most obvious use case for LLMQs is InstantSend. It can be implemented by simply making LLMQ members threshold sign the inputs of observed transactions. If any member of a LLMQ collects enough threshold shares, they’ll create the final result and propagate it to the whole network. With this, the network will only have to propagate one message per transaction input. If a node observes such a message for each of a transaction’s inputs, it can consider that transaction as InstantSend confirmed.

Patent Profiteers: Could Jamaican Lion Save The Cannabis Industry From Patent Trolls?
http://bigbudsmag.com/will-jamaican-lion-save-the-cannabis-industry-from-patent-trolls/

McKernan is sequencing, open sourcing and notarizing DNA using blockchain technology, which he says is more reliable and secure than a typical website, as far as proving prior art.
Thanks to federal law, cannabis is an all-cash industry, with no access to banking — and many cryptocurrencies are rushing to fill the void. Some dispensaries in legal states have used cryptocurrency-enabled systems in order to accept credit and debit cards to get around the all-cash-no-bank quandary. Medicinal Genomics is looking to the blockchain to notarize the open-sourcing of DNA, and to blockchain-enabled cryptocurrency to help fund the work, including the full sequencing of Jamaican Lion.

“We submitted a grant to one particular blockchain that is a for-profit bitcoin called Dash that has some interesting attributes that will probably make it more amenable to the cannabis industry,” McKernan reveals.
“Bitcoin takes 10 minutes to resolve transactions and Dash takes a couple seconds, so it can actually be used at a dispensary,” he continues. “Bitcoin can’t be used at a dispensary, no one is going to wait 10 minutes to get a $72 purchase.

Dash Labs Exclusive Update: Interview with Tito Rios on Data Collection Protocol
https://www.dashforcenews.com/dash-...w-with-tito-rios-on-data-collection-protocol/

The Dash Labs Data Collection Protocol has the potential to revolutionize the academic research industry, which suffers from centralization and inefficiencies with major academic journals charging a hefty premium to submit research and access papers and studies. Dash Labs intends to leverage academic contacts to jump start use of the Protocol by academics to decentralize the process and allow freer and more inexpensive access to both submitting research for review and accessing the research on the consumer end. By using Dash exclusively on the platform, Dash can transition from speculative value to heavy use in a niche industry, where users otherwise completely uninterested in cryptocurrency or speculating on its price nonetheless buy and use Dash because of the opportunities it opens up in the academic field. Because of this, Dash Labs hopes the project will contribute significantly to Dash’s value and use as a currency.

Product Brief: Dash Core Release v0.13.0

https://blog.dash.org/product-brief-dash-core-release-v0-13-0-5d7fddffb7ef

Our development team recently introduced several network upgrades to Testnet which, after sufficient testing, we plan to introduce to Mainnet in Release 0.13.0. This release focuses on improving consensus methods on the network. It includes:

Automatic InstantSend, which will improve the speed of most transactions at no additional cost;
A deterministic masternode list to provide a single source of truth for clients validating transactions;
Special transactions to accommodate non-financial transactions on the blockchain;
A third masternode key to enable delegation of masternode voting; and
Several improvements to private transactions.

Scalability of Dash InstantSend Paves Way for Network-Wide Application

https://www.dashforcenews.com/scala...tsend-paves-way-for-network-wide-application/

The introduction of Automatic InstantSend with Dash version 0.13.0 makes Dash’s already fast transactions even faster. A normal blocktime for Dash is 2.5 minutes, but InstantSend can lock a transaction in just over 1 second thanks to the Masternode network. With the upgrade, this will be available for regular transactions with 4 or fewer inputs and remove the InstantSend fee, which was around $0.02 USD and will now be around Dash’s normal median fee of $0.0005 USD.

The 0.13.0 upgrade also brings Deterministic Masternode Lists and PrivateSend upgrades in addition to the InstantSend upgrade. This upgrade and the new 0.14.0 version will further build the groundwork for version 1.0, which is also considered to be the first of the Evolution releases.

Dash to Significantly Overhaul Security With ChainLocks, Solves 51% Mining Attacks

https://www.dashforcenews.com/dash-...ity-with-chainlocks-solves-51-mining-attacks/

The new Dash Improvement Proposal (DIP) 8, dubbed ChainLocks, will leverage long-living masternode quorums (LLMQs) to sign blocks as they are seen by the network, protecting against attacks and attempts to reverse transactions.
The most important benefit of this new approach is that it makes purely mining-based network attacks impossible, meaning that 51% attacks, such as what recently threatened the Bitcoin Cash network, will no longer be a threat on their own. Additionally, challenges related to mining another chain in secret such as selfish mining and chain reorganizations will similarly become a concern of the past.
On the consumer side, the introduction of chain locks means that transactions can be trusted as secure after a single confirmation.

Exclusive: Dash Claims Crypto Industry First with Automatic InstantSend Transactions

https://www.ccn.com/exclusive-dash-...irst-with-automatic-instantsend-transactions/

However, with Dash’s soon-to-be-released 0.13 update, all simple transactions will automatically be locked using InstantSend for no additional fee and with no special action or support required on the part of the interface. This means that wallets and services that don’t support InstantSend will still be able to support it–a major step forward.
According to Dash, an estimated 90 percent of all Dash transactions will be InstantSend with the new upgrade, while the few “more complicated” ones can still use it manually and pay the extra fee.

The InstantSend update is compounded by a second innovation planned for release in the coming months, 0.14. This will include ChainLocks, a feature that will make 51% mining attacks that have affected coins like Bitcoin Gold and Zencash/Horizen–and which threatened Bitcoin Cash and forced the price to plummet–obsolete on Dash.

Dash Core Group Is Sustainable

https://blog.dash.org/dash-core-group-is-sustainable-5e6e1e877ad3

There is little doubt, the severity of financial losses will accelerate the demise of many poorly conceived projects — ones with weak business models, questionable market value, illegal origins, eroding treasury funds, or nefarious intentions. We have already heard from ETCDEV and Steem. For each of the ones we hear about, there are probably many that are shutting down quietly, running on fumes, or burning through distressed ICO funds. Naturally, I’ve heard concerns about Dash Core Group’s ability to continue supporting Dash.

In short, DCG is not at risk of shutting down anytime soon, or of any significant cuts in staffing levels in the near term. We have a significant buffer in place to withstand the impact of the market bottom, whenever that comes. I’ll explain how we are dealing with the budget constraints so far and our plan to avoid the worst of the impact.

Dash Core v0.13 Going to Mainnet Monday 1/14

https://blog.dash.org/dash-core-v0-13-going-to-mainnet-monday-1-14-ac7b1fd87fc

As a followup to our announcement on January 4th, Dash Core Group is pleased to share that Dash Core v0.13.0 will launch to mainnet on Monday 1/14.
...
As a reminder, these new transactions are not “backwards compatible” with existing cryptocurrency development libraries. Our initial research indicates that in most cases at least a minor patch will be required to allow for continued processing of block / transaction data after the activation of DIP 002: Special Transactions. Activation will occur after 80% of blocks have signalled readiness within an approximately ~1-week window.
...
This significant upgrade will serve as the foundation for Dash Evolution, and we are very excited to take this next big step towards making Dash the most user-friendly blockchain based payments system in the world.
