@roboto:

Free Radical's Rob Yescombe just confirmed to 1UP that the recently troubled developer has been bought for an undisclosed sum by Germany-based Crytek (best known for the games Far Cry and Crysis). This ends weeks of uncertainty about the future of the company, which many had guessed might be forced to shut its doors.
Gx-x umesto gx-x stavljam kada time počinjem rečenicu...navika iz pravopisa, krastavac...:d
Microsoft i Sony imaju.
Stardock Plans New PC RPG
Helped in part by generous Michigan tax breaks, developer/publisher Stardock (Sins of a Solar Empire, Demigod) is planning a $900,000 expansion of its headquarters to accomodate development of a new PC roleplaying game.
The expansion will create some 53 jobs, pushing the company's workforce to well over 100 employees--an impressive number for the once-modest Plymouth, Michigan based studio.
Stardock is readying to ship its collaborative effort with developer Gas Powered Games', the PC strategy title Demigod, in March of this year. The company is also hard at work on the fantasy-strategy game Elemental: War of Magic (PC), due for a February 2010 release.
The Michigan tax breaks, enacted last April to attract jobs in the entertainment sector, have mainly garnered attention from Hollywood film studios looking to cut production costs--but the breaks also apply to game development.
"We think Michigan is well placed to become a hub for technology companies thanks to new programs from the state to make Michigan more competitive to do business in," said Stardock CEO Brad Wardell. "We look forward to continuing our strong growth with additional development projects over the next couple of years."
Last year saw its fair share of shock studio closures plague the gaming industry, arguably the highest profile of which was Ensemble Studios. A Microsoft-owned studio since 2001, Ensemble was best known for its widely acclaimed Age of Empires franchise for PCs. Despite the studio's strong sales record, Microsoft revealed in September that the Ensemble would be shuttered after it completed work on the Xbox 360-exclusive Halo Wars, which ships to retailers March 3.
Shortly after the announced the move, Age of Empires creator Bruce Shelley took to his blog to explain Microsoft's financially motivated rationale for closing Ensemble. As part of his post, he revealed that a portion of Ensemble's leadership team had plans to set up a new development outfit, headed up by current studio chief and founder Tony Goodman.
Today, the first details of that new studio have emerged, as Tony Goodman and other Ensemble alumni have launched Robot Entertainment's official Web site. "The founders of Ensemble Studios, creators of the award-winning series Age of Empires and Halo Wars, proudly present a new endeavor," the placeholder site reads. "Stay tuned, we have some big ideas..."
NEW YORK — Midway Games Inc. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Thursday because it doesn't expect to be able to pay back accelerated debt obligations stemming from media mogul Sumner Redstone's sale of a majority stake in the company.
Midway, best known for the Mortal Kombat video games, had about $281-million (U.S.) in debt and $167.5-million in assets as of Sept. 30, according to its bankruptcy filing.
In December, Mr. Redstone sold his majority stake in Midway – an interest of about 87.2 per cent – to a company led by private investor Mark Thomas.
In a statement Thursday, Midway Chief Executive and President Matt Booty, who took the company's helm last month, called the bankruptcy filing a “difficult but necessary decision.”
“We have been focused on realigning our operations and improving our execution, and this filing will relieve the immediate pressure from our creditors and provide us time for an orderly exploration of our strategic alternatives,” he said in a statement.
The company announced in December it is laying off 25 per cent of its work force, or about 180 people, and closing a studio in Austin, Texas, to cut costs.
Midway's filing came the same day Japanese video game maker Square Enix Co. offered to buy Britain's Eidos Interactive Ltd., the publisher of the Tomb Raider series, in a deal valued at £84.3-million ($121.7-million). The offer signals there may well be market out there for video game companies even in the current economy.
“Midway's intellectual property compares quite favourably to Eidos,” said Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter, adding that if a buyer is willing to pay such a price for Eidos “one would think” they'd be willing to pay for Midway.
It is in the best interest of Midway's creditors, the analyst added, to keep the company a going concern. Midway's Chapter 11 filing means it plans to keep operating — a Chapter 7 filing would have meant it wanted to liquidate.
Midway joins a long line of once-mighty video game publishers filing for bankruptcy. Acclaim Entertainment and 3DO Co., both publicly traded, filed for bankruptcy earlier this decade, but unlike Midway they liquidated their assets. Eidos, meanwhile, had managed to stay in business only to find a buyer Thursday.
Midway and its U.S. subsidiaries filed voluntary petitions in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. The company said the filing does not include its operations outside the U.S., and that they will continue to operate as normal.
The company is seeking several first-day motions so it can continue to operate normally.
