How to tell which panel is in your Samsung LCD/LED TV
You're expecting to get a Samsung panel in your Samsung TV, right?
Well that's not always the case. There could be a Samsung, Sharp, AU Optronics, Chi Mei or other panel in your TV and they vary in performance. The panel you get is a bit of a lottery, even within the same TV model.
There are at least 4 ways to determine which panel you have:
Version: The version is printed on the label on the back of the TV. It is sometimes on the outside of the box but not always and is the only way to tell which panel you're getting before you buy. This may not always be accurate. Examples: TS02, HS01.
TDxx, THxx, TSxx, TUxx, UDxx, UFxx, UHxx, USxx, WHxx: Samsung
HHxx, HSxx, ISxx: Sharp
AHxx, ASxx, BHxx, MHxx, MSxx, YHxx: AU Optronics
CDxx, CHxx, NDxx, NHxx: Chimei
Option code: This is displayed next to the word OPTION in the service menu^. The letter after the screen size determines the manufacturer. See warnings. Example: 55A2UF7EH:
A, S: Samsung
D, P: CMO (Chimei Innolux)
L, R: AUO (Acer Unipac Optronics)
I: CPT (Chunghwa Picture Tube)
Н: Sharp
Pixel pattern: Take a macro zoom photo of the coloured pixels on the far left side including a small portion of the border/bezel (to determine the colour order) while displaying a white screen. Each manufacturer uses different technology. Compare with the samples at the URL below.
Panel code: The panel code is printed on the label on the back of the panel. To see it you need to remove the back cover of the TV. Google the code or search at
http://panelook.com. See warnings. Example: DF460BGLV1H
Technologies used by each manufacturer
Samsung panels typically have better blacks, colour and uniformity. In approximate order from best to worst:
Samsung: S-PVA, PSA
Sharp: ASV, SVA, UV2A
AU Optronics: A-MVA
Chimei: S-MVA

Warnings use at own risk:
If you enter the service menu don't press any keys on the remote as you can accidentally change a setting just by navigating the menus and may brick the TV. Just turn the TV off from the remote to exit the menu. Entering the service menu will likely clear any calibration or other settings so write them all down first.
TV's use high voltages. Use extreme caution and seek appropriate advice before you remove the back cover.
More Information
^ Service menu: to enter the service menu turn the TV off. Then press in quick succession INFO, MENU, MUTE, POWER or if that doesn't work MUTE, 1, 8, 2, POWER. When the TV turns on it might take a few seconds for the service menu to appear. If you only have one of the new mouse shaped smart remotes you're out of luck. I used a 10 year old cheap universal remote from the $2 shop that had codes for various Samsung TV's and tried different codes until I found one where all four buttons worked on my TV.
